STOMACH
An organ that is part of the digestive system. It can
be divided into the cardia and the non-cardia, which
includes the fundus, the body, the antrum, and the
pylorus.
1. While the food enters the stomach, salivary
amylase is still acting on the food particles.
2. The food particles are then softened to form the
chyme.
3. Lipase acts on the food particles and breaks down
complex fat molecules into simple fatty acids.
4. The breakdown of protein is also by the actions of
Hcl and pepsin.
5. The partly digested food molecules are then
transported to the duodenum for further digestion.
SMALL INTESTINE
The longest part of the alimentary canal is the small intestine.
The small intestine is divided into three parts:
i. Duodenum- It is C- shaped. The pancreatic, bile and
hepatic secretions are added to the food.
ii. Jejunum- Middle part of the small intestine.
iii. Ileum- It is highly coiled and opens into the large intestine
• The intestinal juice secreted by the walls of the small
intestine breaks down starch and carbohydrates into
simple sugars. These sugars are known as glucose. It also
converts the proteins into amino acids.
• The finger-like projections known as villi which increase
the surface area of the small intestine for greater
absorption of the digested food.
• The undigested and unabsorbed food passes from the
small intestine to the large intestine.
LARGE INTESTINE
1. The large intestine is part of the
gastrointestinal tract.
2. It is a long tube-like organ that has
three parts viz. caecum, colon,
rectum, and anus.
3. The large intestine aids digestion
by absorbing water and minerals.
4. Many bacteria live in the large
intestine; they play a vital role in
digestion by breaking down fibers.
These bacteria also produce
vitamin B12 and vitamin K which
are further absorbed in the large
intestine.
ANAL CANAL
• The anal canal is the part
that connects the rectum to
the anus, located below the
level of the pelvic
diaphragm.
• Waste products pass to the
anal canal from the rectum.
Nerve responses from the
rectum cause the internal
sphincter to relax while the
external one contracts;
shortly thereafter the
external sphincter also
relaxes and allows
fecal discharge.
