INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

 Human life constitutes various specific stages, in which both men and women
have to pass through. Each stage of human life is very important and unique
in nature as certain physical development takes place in its own way.
 A female enter into a new phase of life through menarche, which is
considered as a central event of female puberty as it signals the possibility of
fertility. This phase will end with the cessation of menstruation and is known
as menopause.
 World Health Organization (WHO) defined natural menopause as the
“Permanent cessation of menstruation resulting from the loss of ovarian
follicular activity.
 Menopause marks the end of a women’s ability to bear children. The usual
age of menopause is between 45 and 55 years with a mean of 51 years.
 Menopause can produce physiological and psychological alterations in
women’s life and it is mainly due to hormonal imbalances

 Physiological alterations affects the body ,which will be exhibited as various


symptoms such as weight gain, neuromuscular changes, changes in skin and
hair, changes in the vagina and reproductive organs and musculo-skeletal
changes.

 Psychological responses are affected by the women’s expectations, marital


stability, financial stability, family views and social or ethnic cultural values.

 Most of the women continue their entire life with menopausal transitions, as
these symptoms have an impact on causing greater stress and a lot of
pressure in life.
NEED OF THE STUDY

 Most of the Menopausal women experience emotional and physiological


problems which adversely affects their life. In our country, the problems
experienced by menopausal women are not less. India has traditionally
ignored women’s health issues including menopause
 Most women know a little about menopause and misinformation can cause
anxiety. There are many myths regarding menopause among the general
public.
 Many women worried about what will happen and how to deal with that
changes. It is necessary for all the women to understand menopause,
interventional packages which will help them to improve the quality of life.
RESEARCH STATEMENT

 “ A study to assess the psychosomatic problems and


knowledge on health promoting lifestyle modification among
post-menopausal women in selected area at,Kozikode”
OBJECTIVES
 Identify somatic problems among post menopausal women.

 Identify the psychological problems among post menopausal women.

 Assess the knowledge on health promoting lifestyle modification among


post menopausal women.
 Find out association between selected socio-demographic factors and
knowledge level among post-menopausal women.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

 Research Approach: Quantitative approach.


 Research design :Non experimental descriptive method
 Setting :Community health centre in Thalakulathur,kozhikode .
 Population: The population of the study is post menopausal women between
45 – 60 years of age.
 Sample and sampling technique:50 post menopausal women between 45-60
years of age,Here the samples were selected by purposive sampling technique.
 Target population :Post menopausal women between 45-60 years of age
residing in Thalakkulathur CHC area.
 Tool and technique:A semi-structured questionnaire and check list
ORGANISATION OF THE FINDINGS

 Part I : Socio-demographic factors.


 Part II : Semi-structured questionnaire to identify the psychosomatic
problems of post menopausal women.
 Part III : Semi-structured questionnaire to identify knowledge on health
promoting life style modification.

b) 49-52 12 24%

c) 53-56 14 28%

d) 56-60 23 46%

It depicts that almost half (46%) of the samples belongs to the age of 56-60
years and a very small percentage (2%) of the samples belongs to the age
group of 45 - 48 years.
