Major branches of Philosophy


Goals for this session:

• Learn the four major and the different branches of Philosophy .


• Increase understanding of the importance of Philosophy.
• Be able to distinguish different types of Philosophy.
Four major branches of
Philosophy
• Metaphysics
• Axiology
• Logic
• Epistemology
Metaphysics
 From the Greek words “Meta ta Physika” which means “after the things of nature”.
 Posited reality outside of human sense and perception.
 Cannot be reached through objective studies of material reality.
 Materialism or Physicalism
 Immaterial or Idealism
Axiology
 From the Greek words “Axios and Logos” which means “Worthy Science”.
 Studies the nature of value.
 Related to two other branches of Philosophy: Ethics and Aesthetics.
 There are universal values that can be argued in Axiology, like Goodness, Beauty, Truth,
Justice, and more.
Logic
 Branch of Philosophy that seeks to organize reasoning.
 Set of rules and techniques for distinguishing good reasoning from bad.
 Often seen as the study of the Laws, Ideas, Correct reasoning, Valid inference, or
Logical truth.
 Logic has two types: Deductive and Inductive reasoning.
 The most important branch of Philosophy because it underlies all other branches of
human enquiry.
Epistemology
 Also known as the Theory of Knowledge, as it is a branch of Philosophy that’s is concerned
with knowledge.
 The Philosophical study of the Nature, Origin and the limitations of human knowledge.
 Epistemic beliefs are individuals beliefs about knowledge and knowing.
 Though Epistemic beliefs and Epistemology is oftenly connected to each other, there’s a
huge difference between this two. As Epistemic means “Relating to knowledge ” and
Epistemology means “Relating to the theory of various aspects of knowledge”.
Conclusion
Philosophy employ other sub branches of to find more specialized answers to specific
fields of work and matters, we need this branches to understand the dimensions of
knowledge and complexities of equiries we face and to guide us more closely to better and
latter answers.
All in all we need this brances for more knowledge so we can understand better the
general ideas of fundamental philosophical questions.
