PROBABILITY OF UNION

AND INTERSECTION
OF EVENTS
Learning Objectives:
MELC: illustrates the probability of a union of two
events.(M10SP-IIIg-1)
1. differentiate union from intersection of two events;
2. illustrate the probability of a union of two events;
and
3. apply the illustration of union of two events in real-
life situations

PROBABILITY
EXPERIMENT
- is a process that Examples:
can be done a. tossing a coin;
repeatedly where b. rolling a die
results may vary
even conditions are
similar.
SAMPLE SPACE
- is the set of all Examples:
possible outcomes
a. tossing a coin
in an experiment. S = {H, T} ;

b. Rolling a die
S = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}
Activity 1:
Give the sample space of the following experiment.
1. Tossing a coin three times.
2. Month of the year which ends with consonant.
3. Colors of the rainbow.
4. Prime numbers from 1 to 20.
5. Barangays in Paracale
which start with the letter “B”.
EVENT
- Is a subset of
sample space in an Examples:
experiment a. getting a head when
tossing a coin;
b. getting an even number
when rolling a die.
1. SIMPLE EVENT
- is an event with Examples:
only one outcome a. The event of getting a
3 in rolling a die.
b. The event of selecting
a month of the year
having the letter “F”
2. COMPOUND
EVENT Examples:
- is an event with a. The event of getting at
more than one least one head when
outcome tossing three coins
simultaneously.
b. The event of getting two
numbers with a sum
greater than 5 when
rolling two dice.
Activity 2:
Identify whether the given event is simple or
compound.
1. In rolling a die:
a. getting an odd number greater than 4
b. getting an even number greater than 3
c. getting a number divisible by 3
2. In tossing two coins:
d. getting both tails
e. getting at least one tail
VENN DIAGRAM
- a diagram that uses
circles to represent
sets, in which the
relations between the
sets are indicated by
the arrangement of the
circles.
UNION OF
EVENTS
- A set that contains
all of the elements
that are in at least
one of the two
events. The union is
written as AB.
INTERSECTION OF
- is a set that
EVENTS
contains all of the
elements that are in
both events. The
intersection of an
event is written as
A∩B
COMPLEMENT OF AN
- is a set of all outcomes
EVENT
that are NOT in the event.
So the complement of an
event E is the set of all
outcomes which are not in
E. And together the event
and its complement makes
all possible outcomes.
PROBABILITY
- Probability refers to
the chance or possibility
that an event will occur.
It is the ratio of the
number of desired
outcomes to the total
number of outcomes.
PROBABILITY OF THE
INTERSECTION OF TWO
EVENTS
- The probability of the
intersection of two
events equals the
probability that both
events occur. If there is
no overlap, then that
probability is zero.
PROBABILITY OF THE UNION
OF TWO EVENTS
- The probability of
the union of two
events equals the
probability that
either event occurs.
Activity 3:
Street Dancing Pabirik Got Talent
Read the situation below and answer (S) (P)
the questions that follow.
As part of the celebration of
6
Pabirik Festival 2023, the Local 10 6
Government of Paracale conducted
the Miss Paracale 2023 (M), the 2
7 4
Street Dancing Competition (S), and
the Pabirik Got Talent (P). The Venn
diagram below shows the number of 2
15
Grade 10 students in two sections of
Maximo Manarang High School who
watched the festival activities. Miss Paracale (P)
QUESTIONS:

1.How many students are asked in the survey?

2. How many students watched Miss Paracale?
3.
If a student is randomly chosen, what is the probabili
ty that the student watched Street Dancing or Miss
Paracale?
4.
If a student is randomly chosen, what is the probabili
ty that the student watched only Miss
ABSTRACTION:

1.How will you identify if a problem involves union of

two events?
2.How will you identify if a problem involves
intersection of events?
3.Differentiate union of two events from intersection
of two events?
Activity 4:
Group Activity
Divide the class into three groups. Each group will be
given an activity sheet. Complete the Venn Diagram based
on the situation given and answer the given question.
Criteria
1. Correctness of Idea -------- 20 points
2. Completeness -------- 10 points
3. Clarity of Presentation -------- 20 points
TOTAL -------- 50 points
Generalization
Processing Questions:

1.
How can you determine whether the given
two events involve union or intersection of
two events?

2. How will you illustrate the probability of

union of two events?

Assignment:
Answer the given problem.

Dario puts 44 marbles in a box in which
14 are red, 12 are blue, and 18 are
