At the end of the lesson, you must be able to:

• Identified the evidence of chemical reaction;

• Acquired knowledge about chemical equation;
• Identified the reactant and product in a chemical equation; and
• Distinguished the different types of chemical reaction.
Matter undergoes a change.
The changes are of two types:
Physical and chemical
change.
Let’s take a look at these pictures. Classify the following as Physical or Chemical chang e.

Let’s take a look at these pictures. Classify the following as Physical or Chemical chang e.

Physical change involves only a change
in appearance but not in composition of
the material.
CHEMICAL CHANGE PHYSICAL CHANGE

Chemical change involves not only the

change the appearance
CHEMICAL CHANGE
of the material butCHEMICAL CHANGE
PHYSICAL CHANGE
also its composition.
How can we tell whether a change in matter
involves a chemical reaction?

What evidences/signs should be present to

consider that a chemical reaction occurred?
BALLOON BLOW-UP
a) What happened when baking soda was added to the
vinegar?

b) What happened to the balloon?

c) What sign/s have you observed which signify a

chemical reaction?

d) Based on your activity, what is chemical reaction?

CHEMICAL REACTION
is a process in which one or more
substance is produced as a result
of chemical change.
A chemical reaction usually accompanied by one or more combination of the following:

• The production of heat and light

• The formation of a precipitate
• The evolution of gas
• A change in color of the material or there is a change in the temperature.
Question: Based on your activity, what do you think confirms the
occurrence of a chemical reaction?

a) The production of heat and light

b)The formation of a precipitate
c) The evolution of gas
d)A change in color of the material or a change in the temperature.
CHEMICAL EQUATION
is a symbolic representation of a chemical reaction.
There are two parts of a chemical equation:
• Reactants- are substances before reaction and written on the
left side of the chemical equation.
• Products- are the substances resulting from the reaction and
presented at the right side of the chemical equation.
• The reactants and products are separated by an arrow
In a chemical reaction, reactants contact each other, bonds between atoms in the
reactants are broken, and atoms rearrange to form new bonds to make the products.

Questions:

• We call the substances before the chemical reactions as reactants. What are the
reactants in the activity?

• What do you think happened to the reactants during the chemical reactions?

• We call the substances produced during the chemical reaction, the products. What
are the products in the activity?
