The Passive Voice
Active and Passive Sentences

• Active sentences = Focus on the person who does the action.

Patricia speaks English.
• Passive sentenses = Focus on the action itself or on the thing the action
affects.
English is spoken by Patricia.
• We also use the passive when we don’t know who does / did the action or it
isn’t important.
My wallet was stolen yesterday.
The Passive Voice – Structure/Form
⮚We form the simple present passive with am/is/are + past participle
of the main verb.
⮚We form the simple past passive with was/were + past participle of
the main verb.

Example:

Simple present passive: Toyota cars are built in Japan.

Simple past passive: The buildings were destroyed five years ago.
Passive: be + Past Participle

1.Active= Focus more on the subject of the sentence.

2.Passive= Focus more on the object of the sentence.
