VITAMIN E AND K

 As a powerful antioxident , vitamin E protects

your cells against premature aging and damage by
free radicals
 Vitamin E is a family of eight structurally similar
antioxidants that are divided into two groups :
 Tocopherols : alpha tocopherol , beta tocopherol,
gamma tocopherol,delta tocophrol.
 Tocotrienols: alpha tocotrienol , beta tocotrienol,
gamma tocotrienol and delta tocotrienol.
ROLE AND FUNCTION
 Its main function is to act as an antioxidant
preventing oxidative stress and protecting fatty
acids in your cell membrane from free
radicals

 In high amounts , vitamin E acts as a blood

thinner , reducing the bloods ability to clot
SOURCES
Its richest sources include vegetable oils such as sunflower oil and
nuts such as almonds and hazelnuts.
Other rich sources include avocado, peanut butter , fatty fish and
fish liver oil.
DEFICIENCY
 Vitamin E deficiency is uncommon and is never
detected in normal people

 Symptoms of vitamin E deficiency include muscle

weakness, walking difficulties, tremors , poor immune
function and numbness.

 Severe long term deficiency may lead to anaemia ,

heart diseases , blindness, dementia, poor reflexes etc.
Vitamin K plays an imporatant role in blood clotting.
It is a group of fat soluble compounds divided into
two :

oVitamin K1 (phylloquinone) : found in plant

sourced foods, phylloquinone is the main form of
vitamin K in the diet
oVitamin K2 (menaquinone): found in animal sorced
foods and fermented soya products and is also
produced by gut bacteria in the colon
ROLE AND FUNCTION
 Vitamin K plays an essential role in blood
clotting

 Its other functions include supporting bone

health, and help prevent calcification of blood
vessels ,potentially reducing the risk of heart
diseases
SOURCES
The best sources of vitamin K are green leafy vegetables and
soy products.
It is also found in small amounts in foods such as eggs, liver
and butter ,broccoli and brussel sprouts.
DEFICIENCY
 Without vitamin K your blood would not clot
and a small wound could cause unstoppable
bleeding ,vitamin k deficiency is rare since the
body only needs small amounts to maintain its
function

 Low levels of vitamin k have also been linked

with reduced bone density and increased risk of
fractures in woman
