Method Study

Method Study

 Purpose: Eliminate unnecessary

activities/movements and achieve the best method
for performing an operation.
 Involves systematic recording and critical
examination of ways of doing work
 Breaks down an operation into its component
elements and analyzes these
Methods Study

Methods Study tries to achieve improvement in

efficiency of work through the following.
 Improved layout and design of workplace
 Improved and efficient work procedures
 Effective utilization of men, machines and materials
Methods Study

Labor Standards/Work Standards : represent

the time it should take an average employee to
perform specific tasks with normal effort and skills
Methods Study consists of:
 Time study : Tries to determine the ideal time taken in the
performance of a well-defined job.
 Motion study is the analysis of human work, to find out the
best method of doing it which involves least efforts.
Methods Study

Work Standards can be used for

Estimating costs
Motivating workers
Compare processes
Performance appraisal
Capacity planning
Methods Study

Steps in Time Study (Work Measurement)

 Define task
 Divide task into small elements
 Record time for each element
 Compute average time based on many observations
Methods Study

Average time
= sum of observations for elemental time/no. of
observations
Normal time
= Average time x Performance rating factor
Standard time
= Normal time * (1+allowance)

Performance rating factor

= Observed performance/Normal performance
