In a black box containing slips of paper,
each student will pick only one slip and
unfold it once the instruction is given. Four
of the slips has a black dot and the rest are
plain blank. The students who will get the
slip marked with a block dot will be our
lucky students for today.
You just hit the lottery jackpot and won
P10,000,000. What are you going to do with
the cash prize? List down 3 dreams that you
wish to fulfil in the given situation?

At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:

a. determine the author’s purpose by analyzing the text structure of the


short story, The Lottery;
b. identify the theme(s) of the story by analyzing the symbols used,
and;
c. relate oneself to any of the characters of the story by creating a
persuasive speech.

music stops, the student with the ball must

2. Who is telling the story? Or from what point-of-view
the story is written?
3. What had some village children gathered?
4. How long does it take to finish the town’s lottery?
5. Where was the name of the villagers written before
using slips of paper?
6. What are the materials or tools needed to complete
the lottery?
7. What are the mechanics or rules of the lottery?
8. Why did Mrs. Hutchinson starts to complain?
9. What did the people in the village do to Mrs.
Hutchinson?
10. Why do you think the villagers are doing this
ritual/tradition annually?

something abstract, such as an idea or belief. A literary symbol
is an object, a person, a situation, or an action that has a literal
meaning in a story but suggests or represents other meanings.

Example:
Rock symbolizes violence that humans are seemingly always
prepared to commit.

practice of the lottery in your town.
