Physical Education 1
(PE 11)
What for you is Physical Education?
P.E is not just PHYSICAL
EDUCATION.
It can also be PERSONAL
ENHANCEMENT!!
Physical Education is a concern for life.
Mainly because we must strive to be a better
version of our present selves. We should
treat PE as a commitment for self-
appreciation and improvement.
What is Physical Education?
It is an educational course related of
maintaining the human body through
physical exercises.
It also refers to a significant
segment of general education
which aims to contribute to the
total development of the students
through participating in various
activities.
It provides opportunities to
acquire lifelong skills that are
essential to their physical, mental,
social and the emotional
development.
Physical education in itself is a
study of movement.
The sole purpose of PE is to
push students to their fullest
potential. No one can say that
they can’t move or do work.
Everything that they do
corresponds to Physical
Education!
The way they walk, the way
they stand or the things they
do. All these are connected
Physical Education.
Objectives of Physical Education
The goals and ideals of Physical
Education is to give assistance to
learners. To maintain and develop a
healthy lifestyle that can only be achieved
through the acquisition of knowledge,
desirable habits and attitudes, dance and
game skills, and wholesome interpersonal
relationships with peers or colleagues.
These are the four main
objectives of physical education;
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
OBJECTIVES
Physical fitness, which tackles about the capacity of
the learner’s body to engage in work or in play
without experiencing stress or fatigue, is the most
important goal of physical education. This can be
achieved through regular exercise and the
participation in different activities. In achieving the
development and maintenance of physical fitness,
basic movement skills, games, sports and dance skills
are acquired that can improve the learner’s
capability to enjoy lifetime recreational activities.
MENTAL DEVELOPMENT
OBJECTIVES
Focus is the primary tool in acquiring knowledge
and understanding, the ability to analyse body
movements and skills, evaluating situations in
games or play and decision making. Having the
knowledge of understanding the rules of the games
leads to a better performance or appreciation of
the activity if you are an audience. Creativity is an
essential part of growth that can be enhanced if an
individual has a background and an exposure to
varied physical activities.
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
OBJECTIVES
A person can perform vigorous activities by himself
like home workouts or by simply doing daily
chores. But to develop interpersonal skills, or social
relationships with others like peers and friends, one
can play, dance or exercise with other people. By
doing so, a person can develop a sense of respect to
others and practices fair play. These objective of
physical education aims to develop one’s ability to
work in teams, practice sportsmanship and develop
leadership.

Emotional Development
Objectives
A person can acquire pleasant attitudes, desirable
habits, sense of appreciation and values if a person
will participate in various physical activities. By
participating in different activities, one can
develop positive character traits such as courage,
self-confidence, discipline, appreciative nature to
beautiful performances, as well as self-expression.

Physical education aims to not only
test one’s capacity to move, play or
dance, but it also provide
developments to a person’s totality
or well-being.
In all fairness, PE is not just a subject
to be learned, it is a subject to live by.
It encourages self-appreciation and
responsibility.
It creates a person capable of
performing tasks without hesitance
and stress. It has different aspects but
it aims to improve and a learner’s
way of life.
The benefits of Physical Education can
have a lifelong impact. The benefits a
person can gain if one takes the
subject with focus and appreciation
can be enjoyed for the rest of their
lives.
A Physically Educated Person:
• understands the potential of physical education
activities in the attainment of a healthy lifestyle and
pushes through to achieve this goal;
• exercises regularly to develop and maintain their
weight and physical fitness;
• acquires the needed skills to enable him to
participate actively in different activities;
• eats a balanced diet;
• gets enough sleep and avoids the use of
drugs and any substance that may have ill
effects in the body;
• enjoys participation in a variety of
vigorous activities
• has appreciation to good performances
in games, sports, and dances.
WHAT IS PHYSICAL
FITNESS?
It refers to the ability of your body
systems to work efficiently together to
allow to be healthy and perform
activities of daily living . By efficient
meaning the ability to perform daily
activities with the least amount of effort
possible.
If you do experience fatigue or get
tired, you can immediately bounce
back towards the tasks that you were
doing with the shortest amount of rest.
WHY IS PHYSICAL
FITNESS IMPORTANT?
A physically fit person works
without feeling exhausted or the
feeling of being worked out. A
physically fit person accomplishes
his/her tasks with minimal stress or
no stress at all. He as a better
outlook on whatever he may face in
life.
A physically fit individual looks at his
tasks or his work and think like its not
work at all but just simple concerns
that must be fulfilled.
Excellent physical health
contributes to self-confidence and
poise. It gives the person a feeling
of security. It enables the person
to mingle with people at work
and at play with satisfaction.
THE
COMPONENTS
OF PHYSICAL
FITNESS
1. STRENGTH

- is the ability of muscles to overcome

resistance. Strength can also be defined
as the amount of force a muscle, or a
muscle group can exert.
2. CARDIO-RESPIRATORY ENDURANCE

- refers to the ability of the heart and lungs

to deliver oxygen to working muscles during
continuous physical activity, which is an
important indicator of physical health.
3. FLEXIBILITY

- the ability of a joint or series of joints

to move through an unrestricted, pain
free range of motion.
4. AGILITY

- defined as a skill-related component of

physical fitness that relates to the ability to
rapidly change the position of the entire
body in space with speed and accuracy.
5. BALANCE

- the ability to move or to remain in a

position without losing control or falling.
6. SPEED

- is the rate at which someone can move all or

part of their body when performing a
movement or covering a distance.
7. POWER

- is the ability to perform strength-based

movements quickly.
8. COORDINATION

- Coordination generally refers to moving two

or more parts of your body at the same time to
achieve a specific goal.
9. BODY COMPOSITION

- One of the newer attributes in physical

fitness components. It refers to the relative
distribution of lean and fat body tissues. It is
measured through calculating your Body Mass
Index (BMI).
Obesity: 38% or more Overweight:
26–37% Acceptable: 18–25% Fit non-
athletes: 14–17%

PHYSICAL FITNESS TESTS

How fit can you say you really are? Each and
every individual that enrols in Physical Education
must determine their strengths and weaknesses.
By doing so, they may know what particular
activity they should focus more to improve on the
aspect that they seem lacking.
Your physical capabilities will help determine the
quality of your performance. You can be an ordinary
individual, an athlete, or a dancer. To achieve these,
we must all have SELF-DISCIPLINE. Regular
participation in vigorous workouts can do wonders
in the development and maintenance of body fit to
work, enjoy various activities and meet life’s
challenges. Teachers encourages students to do so
but it is with the students own decisions and consent
if they want to practice good health habits.

The Bureau of Physical Education and School
Sports (BPESS) recommended that all students
must undergo series of tests to determine their
physical fitness as an individual. These tests were
called as Physical Fitness Tests (PFT) which
measure approximately the components with the
use of minimal facilities and equipment.
Test No. 1 Standing Long Jump –

measures leg strength and power

Facilities: Jumping pit filled with soft
damp sand at least 30 centimetres deep.
Equipment: tape measure laid on the
ground.

hamstring muscles

surface that has a wall on one side; a
meterstick or a flat wooden stick with a
