ANALYSIS OF ICE FILLED TUBULAR

COLUMN UNDER LOAD

INTRODUCTION

 In cold regions, the construction of concrete structure is difficult.

 The mixing, pouring and curing of concrete in cold areas is very difficult because
the temperature is below 0oC.
 The people from North Pole developed the idea of using ice as their building
material.
 The freezing and refreezing, made the igloos harden.
 Various studies were conducted for the behavior of ice as a substitute material for
concrete.
 Below the freezing point, ice is strong in compression and weak in tension like
concrete.

OBJECTIVES

 To study the structural behaviour of IFST stub column by changing cross-section of

stub column
 To compare the behaviour of CFST and IFST stub columns under axial loading

Analytical Behaviour of Ice Filled Tubular Stub Column 3

SCOPE

 The work is limited to the modelling and analysis using ANSYS software
 The work is restricted to the static structural analysis
 Area of the specimens are kept constant for different shapes.

filled steel
tubular stub  It is an experimental work in which the square ice filled stub column
columns
is subjected to the axial compressive load
The IFT columns exhibited higher strength and better ductility than
those of the summation of hollow steel tubes and plain ice columns
The initial stiffness and ultimate bearing capacity of the IFT stub
columns increased with the decrease of B/t ratio (varying from 39.5 to
77).

This paper is used to generate simulation data covering a
columns under
axial compression wide range of parameters for circular and rectangular CFST stub
columns under axial compression.
Regression analysis is conducted to propose simplified models
to predict the compressive strength, the compressive stiffness,
and the compressive strain corresponding to the compressive
strength (ductility) for the composite columns.
Simplified models have been proposed for the predictions of
compressive stiffness and compressive strain corresponding to
the ultimate strength.

 Six specimens with different steel ratio were tested. The
square steel tube
corresponding nonlinear Finite-Element (FE) models were
established to analyze the mechanical properties.
 The influences of different materials are analyzed in this
paper.
 The study shows that the HCFHST specimen under pure
bending load has a high ductility.
 The ultimate bearing capacity of the HCFHST under pure
bending moment increases with steel ratio and steel yield
strength.

The mechanical properties of EPS foam during dynamic
compression are mostly affected by the density.
The temperature decrease to 20OC the strength of the EPS
foam is increased by 8%.

RESEARCH GAP

 Most of the researches were based on square and circular ice filled steel tubular stub
column.
 Hence, the behaviour of IFST stub columns is investigated by varying shapes,
loading condition, using different outer tube materials, corrugation etc.
