When the character of Meera is introduced?
(Critical analysis)
Meera rescues Gopal and takes him with her to her house, to her room
where she lives alone, not only but also allows Gopal to live with her.
Meera’s cultural background

Social construction and identity crisis
“Gopal, I want to help children suffering from cancer. I want to teach the naked poor
people sleeping on the road. Now Meera does not feel the need of Meera. This world
needs Meera. I don't know if I am going in the right direction or taking the wrong
decision by leaving you, but I don't care about right and wrong. I just want to leave
Mira's world for a while. My happiness, my pain, my life, my complaints for how long?
I just want to keep away from myself, because seeing Id’s death in a flash makes me
realize that everything here is so fleeting, then why these complaints? Why such a
longing for happiness? I don't want reasons to be happy or sad, I don't want events or
happiness. I will stand aloof and accept whatever comes.” Gopal had never seen this
Meera. Her words seemed to be making Gopal's search for his favorite work, his search
for happiness, a fog! It seemed right and wrong. She seemed to have acquired something
and to have gone mad. Gopal was at a loss of words. (Doṅgā Nôrthapole)
Social Construction and Gender
discrimination
• Gender is so pervasive that in our society we assume it is bred
into our genes. Most people find it hard to believe that gender is
social life, and is the texture and order of that social life. Yet

Both freedom and death are central concepts for Simone de Beauvoir in her
philosophy, fiction, and memoir. We can only give meaning to life by constructing
our own set of values and continually reassessing them. There is third possibility
for freedom and oppression: bad faith. Beauvoir argues that although our genuine
Bad faith is choosing not to will ourselves free. If we are shown or aware of how to
be free but do not take up that freedom, it is a moral fault. One example of bad faith
would be pretending that in western society women have no option other than
marriage.
• Does this not support that women have been and will
continue to be victimized in the development of men!
Meera's death becomes a symbol of a dying being within a
woman!
