THE BIG BANG

THEORY
Objectives

At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:

• Describe the Big Bang Theory
• Describe the formation of light elements in the
universe seconds after the big bang
• Give evidence for the formation of light
elements after the big bang

3
Model of an expanding universe

4
Materials Needed

1 balloon
2 markers (1 black, 1 red)
1 tape measure

5

PROCEDURE:
• Ask a teammate to blow the balloon
with air until it is stretched
• Using a tape measure, measure its
diameter
• Draw red dots on the surface of the
balloon about 2cm apart
• Locate a central dot and encircle it
with black marker
• Choose 10 dots – some far and some
near the central dot. Record these
distances in column 2 of your table 7
• Have your teammate blow again PROCEDURE:
your balloon. This time, measure the
distance of A to I from central dots.
Record the distances in column 3 of
the data table
• Subtract the data in column to from
column 3. Record the resulting data
in column 4
• Divide the data in column 3 by the
data column 2. Record your answers
in column 5.
8
1.What does blowing the balloon
represent?
2.Compare the data in column 2
with that of column 4. Explain QUESTIONS
your answer. AND
3.Compare the set of data in PROBLEMS
column 2 with that of column 5.
Explain your answer
4.What conclusion can be drawn
about the universe based on the
activity? 9

1.Blowing the balloon represents the
expansion of the universe.
2.The data in column 4 is the distance
expanded by the dots in the balloon. It
is how far the dots expand from the ANSWERS TO
original position, which is column 2. QUESTIONS
3.The data in column 5 is the factor at
which the original position of the dots
in column 2 has expanded
4.That the universe in continuously
expanding 12
