MOTION IN ONE DIMENSION: DESCRIBING

AND MEASURING MOTION
LEARNING OBJECTIVE

01
DESCRIBE THE MOTION OF AN OBJECT IN TERMS OF
DISTANCE, DISPLACEMENT, SPEED OR VELOCITY AND
ACCELERATION.

02
DIFFERENTIATE QUANTITIES IN TERMS OF MAGNITUDE AND
DIRECTION.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION
How will understanding of motion be useful in
understanding everyday occurrences?
COMPREHENSION CHECK

Oil between machine parts

would be an example of
which type of friction?
A. fluid
B. static
C. sliding
D. rolling
COMPREHENSION CHECK

How can friction be reduced?

A. use wax, grease or oil
B. reduce the force acting
between the 2 surfaces
C. reduce the roughness of the 2
surfaces coming in contact
D. all of the above are ways of
reducing friction
COMPREHENSION CHECK
Which of the following is an
example of friction that is
harmful?
A. Pencil marking on paper
B. Engine parts wearing out
C. Sand placed on ice in the
winter
D. Using an eraser to erase
marks
01
ONE MINUTE CHALLENGE

Are all moving objects

considered in motion?
DISTANCE VS. DISPLACEMENT

What are scalar and vector quantities?

Scalar- are quantities that are fully described by a
magnitude (or numerical value) alone.

Vector- are quantities that are fully described by

both a magnitude and a direction.
LET’S TRY!

Quantity Category
a. 5m SCALAR

b. 30 m/sec, East VECTOR

c. 5 mi., North VECTOR

d. 20 degrees Celsius SCALAR

e. 256 byte SCALAR

f. 4000 Calories SCALAR

DISTANCE VS. DISPLACEMENT
Distance- is  a scalar quantity that refers to "how
much ground an object has covered" during its
motion
Displacement- is a vector quantity that refers to
"how far out of place an object is"; it is the object's
overall change in position.
Distance vs. Displacement
DISTANCE DISPLACEMENT
Distance is the length of the path Displacement is the shortest distance
travelled by a body while moving from between the intial position and the final
an initial position to a final position. position of the body.
Distance is a scalar quantity. Displacement is a vector quantity.
Distance is measured is always Displacement can be positive or
positive negative depending on the reference
point
The total distance covered is equal to The net displacement is the vector sum
the algebraic sum of all different of the individual displacements in
directions different directions.
There is always a distance covered Displacement will be zero if the body
whenever there is a motion comes back to its initial position.
What is the distance and the displacement value?
Determine the resulting displacement and the distance traveled by the skier
during these three minutes.
ANSWER:

The skier covers a distance of

(180 m + 140 m + 100 m) = 420 m

and has a
displacement of 140 m, rightward.
YOU TRY!

What is the coach's resulting displacement and distance

of travel?

● What is the coach's resulting displacement

and distance of travel?
ANSWER:

The coach covers a distance of

(35 yds + 20 yds + 40 yds) = 95 yards

and has a displacement of 55 yards, left.

Exercise:

1. David walks 3 km north, then turns and walks 4 km east. Express

your answer in kilometers

2. Ray runs 30 feet north, 30 feet west, and then 30

feet south.
How will understanding of
motion be useful in
understanding everyday
occurrences?
