MENSTRUAL
CYCLE
MENSTRUAL CYCLE
Is the monthly series of changes a
woman’s body goes through in
preparation for the possibility of
pregnancy.
During each cycle, an egg develops
and is released from the ovaries.
The lining of the uterus builds
up.
If the pregnancy doesn't
happen, the uterine lining
sheds during the menstrual
period.
Then the cycle starts again.
PARTS OF
MENSTRUAL CYCLE
FIRST PART OF THE CYCLE
Prepares an It includes the
egg to be following:
released from 1.Menstrual
the ovary and phase
2.Follicular
builds the lining
phase
of the uterus.
3.Proliferative
phase
SECOND PART OF THE CYCLE
Prepares the body They are the
specifically the uterus in following:
order to accept a
fertilized egg. 1.Luteal
On the other hand, the phase
next cycle will proceed if 2.Secretory
pregnancy did not pursue. phase
The menstrual cycle is actually made up
of two cycles that interact and overlap.
One that takes place in the ovaries and
the other one in the uterus.
The brain, ovaries, and uterus work
together and communicate through
hormones then send chemical signals
through the blood from the one part of
the body to another to keep the cycle
going.
FIRST PART:
1. MENSTRUAL
PHASE
MENSTRUAL PHASE
Is the first stage of the menstrual
cycle.
It is also when a woman gets her
period or menstruation.
This phase starts when an egg from
the previous cycle isn’t fertilized.
Because pregnancy hasn’t take place, levels
of the hormones estrogen and progesterone
drop.
The thickened lining of the uterus, which
would support the pregnancy, is no longer
needed, so it sheds through the vagina.
During the period, a girl releases a
combination of blood, mucus, and tissue from
her uterus.
A girl or a woman with menstruation may
experience the following:
Cramps Irritability
Headaches Mood swings
Tender breast Tiredness
Bloating Low back pain
In average, women are in the
menstrual phase of their cycle
for 3 to 7 days. Some women
have longer periods than
others.
2. FOLLICULAR
PHASE
FOLLICULAR PHASE
Starts on the first day of period, so there is some overlap
in the menstrual phase.
It ends when a girl ovulates.
This phase starts when hypothalamus sends a signal to
pituitary gland to release follicle-stimulating hormone
(FSH).
Thishormone stimulates the ovaries to produce around 5
to 20 small sacs called follicles.
Each follicle contains an immature egg.
How many eggs will mature during this
phase?
Only the healthiest egg will mature.
The rest will be absorbed by the
body.
The maturing follicle sets off a surge
in estrogen that thickens the lining of
the uterus.
This creates a nutrient-rich
How long does it last?
The average follicular phase
lasts for about 16 days.
It can range from 11 to 27
days, depending on the cycle.
3. PROLIFERATIVE
PHASE
PROLIFERATIVE PHASE
Itis the phase where the uterus is responding to the
estrogen produced by the follicles, rebuilding the lining
that was just shed during the last period.
Itis the phase where the endometrium (lining of the
uterus) becomes thicker.
The endometrium is the thinnest during the period, and
thickens throughout this phase until ovulation occurs.
The uterus does this to create a place where a potential
fertilized egg can implant and grow.
OVULATION PHASE
OVULATION PHASE
Ovulation – is the process in which the ovary releases
a mature egg. During the process the released egg
from the ovary travels to the fallopian tube and ready
to be fertilized by the sperm.
