Properties of a
Line Tangent
to a Circle
Property
is any characteristic that applies to a
given set.

.
Property 1

If a line is tangent to a circle, then it is

perpendicular to the radius drawn to the
point of tangency.
. J

Property 2

If a line is perpendicular to a tangent at

the point of tangency, then it passes
through the center of the circle.

Property 3

If two segments from the same exterior

point are tangent to a circle, then the two
segments. are congruent.
Example 1. In figure 3, if = 10x – 16 and = 4x + 32,
find x and measures of and
. B

A
. . D

.C
Solution:

(BD)=(CD)
10x – 16 = 4x + 32
10x – 4x = 32 + 16
6x = 48
6x/6=48/6
x=8
Solution:

m = 10x – 16
m = 10(8) – 16
m = 80 – 16
m = 64
m = 4x + 32
m = 4(8) + 32
m = 32 + 32
m = 64
Since = 64 then = 64
Property 4

If two segments from the same exterior

point. are tangent to a circle, then the line
joining the point to center of the circle
form equal angles.

Solution:
Since the sum of the measures of the exterior angle of a triangle is 180°,
then
m∠BDA + m∠DAB + m∠ABD =
180°
m∠BDA = 90°
m∠CBA = 75° = m∠ABD
m∠DAB = 180° - (90° + 75°)
m∠DAB = 180° - 165°
m∠DAB = 15°
Since m∠DAB = m∠BAC and m∠DAB =
15°, then m∠BAC = 15°.

Answer:
m∠DAB = 15°
m∠BAC = 15

Solution:
Perimeter (▲MPR) = + +
= +
= +
= +

If = 12 cm, then = 12 cm
If = 4 cm, then = 4 cm
If = 10 cm, then = 10 cm
= +
= 12 cm + 10 cm
= 22 cm

= +
= 10 cm + 4 cm
= 14 cm

= +
= 4 cm + 12 cm
= 16 cm
Answer:

Perimeter (▲MPR) = + +
Perimeter (▲MPR) = 22 cm + 14 cm + 16 cm
Perimeter (▲MPR) = 52 cm
Property 6

The measure of an angle formed by the

two tangents of a circle intersecting at a
point in the exterior of the circle is one-
half of the absolute value of the difference
of the measures of the intercepted arcs.

In figure 8, ∠D is formed by two tangents intersecting at a
point in the exterior of the circle. The measure of ∠D is one-
half of the absolute value of the difference of the measures
