Example 1
• A right triangle has one angle of 30° and one side with length 8.0 cm,
as shown in Figure 0.14. What is the angle fi and what are the lengths
x and y of the other two sides of the triangle?
• Solution:
•  = 90 – 30 = 60o
• Sin 30 = 8.0 / y
• y = 8.0 / sin 30 = 16 cm
• Cos 30 = x / y = x / 16
• x = cos 30 x 16 = 13.85 cm
Example 2
• A right triangle has two sides with lengths as specified in Figure 0.15.
What is the length x of the third side of the triangle, and what is the
angle u, in degrees?

Vector Question 1
Two vectors, one with magnitude 3 m and the other with magnitude
4m, are added together. What is the resultant vector if these two
vectors are antiparallel.
A. 1 m
B. 3 m
C. 4 m
Vector question 2 (Show graphically)
If you walk 40 m east, then 30 m north, how far from the starting point
are you?

A. 10 m
B. 50 m
C. 70 m
Question 3
• On a cross-country ski trip, you travel 1.00 km north and then 2.00 km
east. (a) How far and in what direction are you from your starting
point? (b) What are the magnitude and direction of your resultant
displacement?
Question 4 ( Using components of vectors)
• Vector has a magnitude of 50 cm and a direction of 30°, and vector
has a magnitude of 35 cm and a direction of 110°. Both angles are
measured counterclockwise from the positive x axis. Use components
to calculate the magnitude and direction of the vector sum (i.e., the
resultant)
