REVIEW OF THE
LESSON
SAMPLE
PROBLEM

The lifespan of a computer mouse produced by a company has a

normal distribution with a mean of 12 months and a standard
deviation of 2 months, Find the probability that a computer
mouse produced by this company will last:
a. Less than 6 months
b. Between 8 and 14 months
Solution:
a. Less than 6 months

Z= = 0.0013(100) = O.13%
Z=
Z = -3
The z-score of -3 corresponds to 0.0013. Therefore, the
probability of a computer mouse produced by the company will
last less than 6 month is 0.13%.
Solution:
b. Between 8 and 14 months
Z= Z= Z-score of 1= 0.8413

Z= Z= Z-score of -2= 0.0228

Z = -2 Z=1 = 0.8413-0.0228
= 0.8185
Therefore, the probability that a computer mouse produced by
the company will last between 8 and 14 months is 81.85%.
PERCENTILE UNDER THE
NORMAL CURVE

PERCENTILE- is a measure used in statistics indicating the

value below which a given percentage of observations in a group
of observations fall.
SAMPLE PROBLEM 1

1.) Find the percentile of the normal curve?

Solution:
- Express the given percentage as probability

- Locate for the 0.9200 on the z-table. Fin11111 92% is the same as 0.9200
- Find the z-value corresponds to 0.9207 0.9207 is the closest one.
- Locate z-1.41 under the normal curve and make statement z=1.41
- Draw a line through under the curve in step 1.
- Describe the shaded region. The shaded region is 92% of the distribution.
Parameter,
Statistic, and
Sampling Plan
Learning Objectives:
• Distinguish between a parameter and a
static.
• Illustrate random sampling and learn
different methods of obtaining samples
from a population.
A group where members
have something in
Population common, that is, the total
set of observations that
can be made.
A smaller group or subset
of the population in Sample
question.
Statistic
Describes an entire
population.

Describes only the

Parameter sample.
Example:

Suppose you want to know the mean income of teachers in

Tagum city. But if you draw a random sample of 100 teachers
and found out that the mean income of the sample is P17500.

- Mean income of teachers in Tagum City – Parameter

- A random sample of 100 teachers where their mean income is
P17500 - Statistic
Different Sampling
Techniques
SIMPLE RANDOM
SAMPLING

A subset of a statistical
population in
which every member of the
population has
an equal chance of being chosen
as the sample.
STRATIFIED RANDOM
SAMPLING

Involves selecting a simple random

sample from
each of a given number of
subpopulations
proportionally. Each subpopulation is
called a
stratum (plural: strata).
CLUSTER
SAMPLING

A sampling method where the population is first divided into

separate groups called clusters. Then a simple random sample of
clusters from the available clusters in the population is selected.
This sampling technique is usually used when the elements of a
population are spread over a wide geographical area.
1-IN-K
SYSTEMATIC
RANDOM
SAMPLING

Involves the random selection of

one of the first 𝑘 elements in an
ordered population, and then the
systematic selection of every 𝑘th
element thereafter. In this method,
the value of 𝑘 is first calculated by
dividing the population size by the
sample size.
MULTISTAGE
SAMPLING

It is a sampling technique where two or more probability

techniques are combined. It is usually used when it is not
possible to obtain a representative sample with only one of
the aforementioned techniques. It can be described as
sampling within the sample.
