financial institution availability solution would not protect the financial institution from the
risk of data destruction through a cyberattack.

Ensuring 300 critical services could be restored within 24

Institution established network-isolated vaults in three data centers
(Europe, AP and US) with enhanced access controls. IBM z14™ and

Strategy to deliver solutions that enable organizations of

Strengths:
• Dell EMC has been the market leader for decades for
highly available tier one storage.
• Inline compression and deduplication for greater
effective capacity, optimized for open systems.
• PowerMax offers a new level of performance and a
cost-reducing dedupe function that was missing from
VMAX.
• Addition of eNAS gives combined file and block
access.
Weaknesses:
• Clients cannot convert an existing VMAX into a
PowerMax.
• PowerMax was announced two years ago, with no
significant changes since.
• If VMAX users are looking to buy all-NVMe storage to
boost performance, that makes it increasingly more
possible that they will consider purchasing from
competitors.
PowerMax 2000 & 8000 Specs
The PowerMax8000 offers performance density in array
performance density with up to 7.5M IOPS/per rack and
187,000 IOPS/per U (rack unit). It also supports mixed
open systems and mainframe environments. It offers
dual port Intel® Optane™ SSDs and Storage Class
Memory (SCM) as persistent storage. PowerMax 2000
is the entry point and can fit two available Bricks in half
a standard 19” rack of which both are NVMe-oF ready.
• PowerMax 2000 doesn’t support mainframe host.
• PowerMax 8000 max number of ports/brick and
max/array based on initial system sale as multi-brick.
If system originates as a single brick, port counts are
reduced to a 24/per brick max and a 192/per array
max.
• SRDF performance trails IBM Global Mirror and
Metro Mirror.
• New system with no field data, (should be consistent
with VMAX. eNAS and integrated tiering to
cloud/object using S3 add risks.
• GDDR requires non-IBM software and is not well
established with limited track record.
• ProtectPoint is direct backup. Only works with Data
Domain and data encryption at-rest.
• SRDF overhead is greater (vs. IBM), more data at
risk and compromises performance increase from
all flash.

New updates to HIAA and HAD will reinforce their market

Hitachi may become a strong player in the developing
markets for IoT, analytics and AI. HIAA and HAD present
the opportunity to increase the importance of clients’
infrastructure management.
Hitachi claims three times more all-flash performance
and the industry’s only 100% data-availability guarantee.
Weaknesses:
The Hitachi F1500 was announced three years ago with
little to no updates.
Performance focus and reporting is for open systems.
No reported mainframe numbers. Cache is less effective.
F1500 is all flash model.
Hitachi guarantee comes with many limitations and
restrictions.
