Good morning ladies and gentlemen.

My
name is … and I am here to give a brief
presentation on logistics. My presentation is
divided into three sections. The first section
is a definition of the term logistics. The
second section deals with the different
functions of logistics, i.e, transportation and
warehousing. And in the last section, I will
examine the main documents used in
logistics.
• First, let’s start with a brief definition of the
word ‘logistics’. Logistics refers to the overall
process of managing how resources are
acquired, strored, and transported to their
final destination. Logistics management
involves identifying prospective distributors
and suppliers and determining their
effectiveness and accessibility.
• Logistics also describes the organized
movement of physical materials in a
factory. It is usually subdivided into
materials management and distribution
management. Materials management
indicates the control of the efficiency and
effectiveness of the flow of materials in
the factory from the arrival of raw
materials to the packaging of the product.
• Effeciency means working productively
with minimum wasted efforts or expenses.
Effectiveness means producing the desired
or intended results. Now let’s move to
distribution management. Distribution
management includes the storage of
goods and their transportation to
distributors and consumers.
• The term “Logistics” was initially a
military-based term used in reference to
how military personnel obtained, stored,
and moved equipment and supplies. The
term is now used widely in the business
sector, particularly by companies in the
manufacturing sectors, to refer to how
resources are handled and moved along
the supply chain.
Secondly, Logistics includes two major functions
which are Transportation and Warehousing.
Transportation management focuses on planning,
optimizing and executing the use of vehicles to
move goods between warehouses, retail locations
and customers. The transportation is multimodal
and can include sea, air, rail and roads. It is a
complex process that includes planning and
optimizing routes and shipment loads, order
management and freight payment.
It can also extend to yard management, a process
which oversees the movement of vehicles through
the yards outside manufacturing plants,
warehouses and distribution facilities. Carrier
management is an important aspect since the
price, availability and capacity of transportation
carriers can vary widely. Logistics companies
typically use transportation management system
(TMS) software to help meet the demands of
transport-related logistics. There are also niche
applications.
• Warehousing, or warehouse management,
includes such functions as inventory
management and order fulfillment. It also
involves managing warehouse infrastructure and
processes -- for example, in a fulfilment center,
where orders for goods are received, processed
and fulfilled (shipped to the customer). Most
companies use warehouse management system
(WMS) software to manage the flow and storage
of goods and track inventory.
Logistics management is an important
component of supply chain management. While
the terms are sometimes used interchangeably,
logistics focuses on moving products and
materials as efficiently as possible. In contrast,
SCM encompasses a much broader range of
supply chain planning activities, such
as demand planning and sales and operations
planning, and supply chain execution,
including strategic sourcing and transportation
management.
• Finally let’s look at the diffferent
documents that we need in logistics.
Efficient logistics needs an efficient flow of
documentation with regard to the goods
from storage to destination. The process
of distribution involves different means of
transportation and requires secure
packaging.
The various documents included are as follows: Bill
of lading, delivery note, packing list and picking list.
A bill of lading is a transportation document which
serves as the contract of carriage and which
contains the terms and conditions between the
shipper and the carrier. A packing list is a
document prepared by the shipper and which lists
the types and quantities of products in the
shipment. A picking list is a list of products needed
to fulfil or satisfy an order.
