DIE AND THEIR DESIGN
CONSIDERATION
INTRODUCTION

o A die is a specialized machine tool used

in manufacturing industries to cut
and/or form material to a desired shape or profile.
o dies are generally customized to the item they are
used to create.
o The term "die" can be used in a general sense to
refer to a complete press tool with all of its
components.

MATERIAL SELECTION

 Key factors to consider when selecting a die material:

 Strength (1200-2400 MPa)
 Hardness (60-70 HRC)
 Wear resistance
 Heat resistance(>550°C)
 Corrosion resistance
 Cost
MATERIAL SELECTION

Common Material for

Advantages Disadvantages
Die
• High strength and toughness • Limited heat resistance
Tool Steel • Good wear resistance • Prone to chipping and cracking
• Relatively low cost • Can have high tool wear
• High heat resistance
• Higher cost than tool steel
High-Speed Steel • Good wear resistance
• Can be more difficult to machine
• High toughness
• Extremely hard and wear resistant • Higher cost than tool steel and
Carbide • Excellent heat resistance high-speed steel
• Good toughness • More brittle than other materials
• Extremely brittle and prone to
• Extremely hard and wear resistant cracking
Ceramic
• Excellent heat resistance • Very difficult to machine
STEPS IN DESIGN OF DIE

1. The scrap strip : To lay out the

material strip exactly as it will appear
at the bottom of the press stroke
2. The Die Block : Draw the
three views of the die block.
3. The blanking punch : Draw
the blanking punch in the
position above the die block.
4. Piercing punch : Draw the
piercing punch in proper
position.
STEPS IN DESIGN OF DIE

5. Punch plate : Draw the punch

plate in the front and upper right
view.
6. Pilots : Draw the pilots and the
nuts that hold them in the
blanking punch.
7. Gages : Draw the back gage
and front spacer that guide the
strip by its side.
8. The Finger Stop : Draw a
finger stop to position the strip
for piercing the two holes in the
first blank
STEPS IN DESIGN OF DIE

9. The Automatic Stop : Draw an automatic

stop which locates the strip at every punch
stroke
10. The Stripper : Stripper is applied to all three
view.
11. The Fastener : Draw the screw, dowel and
other fasteners.
12. The Die Set : Started with horizontal lines in
the lower views of step 7, and with a dotted
circle in the upper right view of step 8.
