ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION

AND MANAGEMENT
Solid Waste Management
“the discipline associated with the control of generation, storage, collection, transfer
and transport, processing, and disposal of solid wastes.”
Solid waste refers to “all
discarded household or
commercial waste,
nonhazardous
institutional and
industrial waste, street
sweepings, construction
debris, agriculture
waste, and other non-
hazardous or non-toxic
solid waste.”

Ecological Solid Waste Management: status of
implementation of Republic Act No. 9003

Composting is regarded as a means to meet the mandatory

waste diversion requirements. It is the biological decomposition of
biodegradable solid waste under controlled predominantly aerobic
conditions to a state that is sufficiently stable for nuisance-free
storage and handling and is satisfactorily matured for safe use in
agriculture.

Based on information provided by NSWMC, the

number and percentage of LGUs with access to
sanitary landfills have increased from 63 LGUs
(3.9%) in 2008 to 228 LGUs (14%) in 2015.
Integrated Coastal Resources

Coastal resource management is set to address

varied, wide-range and interconnected issues that
directly and indirectly impact coastal areas.
Integrated coastal resource management is
participatory governance for coastal resource
management.

Watershed
Management

Watersheds play a
multi-functional role in
every community. Aside
from providing water for
domestic, agricultural,
and industrial purposes,
watersheds in good
condition serve as
habitats to various plant
and animal species and
play ecological functions
that keep flooding and
other natural disasters at
bay.
Watershed degradation within the Philippines poses a threat to the country’s economy, affecting the livelihood
of the many rural households that depend on the natural resources within individual watershed for their farming
and/or forestry activities.

Agricultural Land Management

In agriculture, productivity serves as

the driving force to intensity
agricultural activities for profit. In
sustaining profit in agriculture,
farmers slowly modified farming
system with the continued use of
chemicals to control of organisms in
the soil, influencing the sustainability
of soil productivity because of the loss
of important organisms in the soil.

Landscape
management requires
that the concept of land
be understood not only as
a surface area, but also as
the soil ecosystem.
FOREST RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
The Amazon rainforest: the world's most important ecosystem
Half of the planet's rainforests have already disappeared. The Amazon is still the most
Amazon Rainforest extensive rainforest on earth, but a disastrously large part of it is now in danger of
disappearing for good. Our goal is to prevent that disaster.

Rainforest
• An area of tall,
mostly evergreen trees and a high
amount of rainfall.
• Are Earth’s oldest
living ecosystems, with some
surviving in their present form for
at least 70 million years.
• They are
incredibly diverse and complex,
home to more than half of the
world’s plant and animal species—
even though they cover just 6% of
Earth’s surface.
