Kiln Migration - Air gap

Migration
• Importance of migration
• Allowable limit of migration
Air gap in kiln tire

• The gap measured between Kiln

shell and tire ID at the top position
is known as air gap.
Mathematical model
• Air gap to be measured at top
center.
Air gap
(D-d) Kiln tire ID(D)

Kiln shell
OD( d)
Need of air gap
• As the kiln running in Hot condition
The out side diameter will increase
as per temperature rise.
• There should be enough gap to
allow the kiln shell to expand in the
kiln tire.Other wise kiln shell will
deform in kiln tire area because of
restriction.
Relation between air gap
and Migration
• Migration is the distance measured for
the relative movement between kiln
shell and the tire.
• D = ID of Kiln tire. ‘d’ = OD
of kiln shell at tire pad area.
• 3.14 x D -3.14 x d = Migration 3.14(D-d)
= Migration
• So 3.14 x Air gap =Migration
Importance of migration
• During kiln running condition we
can not measure the air gap
directly.
• The relation between air gap and
migration we know.So we are
checking migration daily to know
the hot condition air gap.
Allowable limit of
migration
• From 8mm per revolution to 15
mm is normally advisable.
• More migration will lead to
refractory failure in tire area.
• Zero migration will lead to shell
deformation.
