Work Content
• Work content is the measured time content of an activity or task
determined by using recognised work measurement techniques, at
a defined performance level.

How to calculate Work Content

If someone achieves 1 hour’s work content in 1 hour, that is a 100%
performance (60/60 x 100). If they only achieve 45 minutes’ work
content in 1 hour, that is a 75 performance (45/60 x 100).
Total Work Content
• Total work content consists basic work content and excess work
content
• Basic work content is the irreducible minimum time required to
produce a unit of output
• Excess work content: extra time needed to carry out work due to
improper design of product or inefficient method of operation
Interruptions in Work
• This known as ineffective time
• Factors within the controls of organization
• Due to lack of management
• Due to lack of workers

• Factors beyond control

• Nature (rain, earthquake…)
• Man made(Power failure)
HOW MANUFACTURING
TIME IS MADE UP
Interruptions and Production
• Any form of interruptions leads to reduction in productivity
• Especially, interruptions caused within the control are targeted first for
increasing the productivity
Excess work due to defective design
• Bad production design(prevents use of most economic process)
• Lack of standardization(prevents use of high production rate)
• Incorrect quality standards(cause unnecessary work/rejections)
Excess work due to inefficient method of
operation
• Wrong selection of machine
• Incorrect processing conditions(bad working conditions)
• Wrong tool(improper selection of tool)
• Bad plant layout(Unnecessary movement)
• Operator’s bad working method(improper training)
Ineffective time due to lack of management
• Excessive product variety due to improper management market policy
(idle time)
• Lack of standardization(idle time due to short run/tool change)
• Bad production planning(idle time of man/machine)
• Lack of raw materials for processing
• Plant breakdown
• Bad working conditions
• Accidents
Ineffective time due to workers
• Absence, lateness
• Careless workmanship
• Accident
Reducing excess work
• Due to imperfect design
• Design and production people work together
• Increasing batch size allows high volume production
• Market and consumer research
• Due to inefficient manufacturing
• Selection of machine
• Necessary tool
• Identification of processing parameters(speed)
• Factory layout
• Method study
• Workers training
Cont….
• Due to worker’s inefficiency
• Relationship between workers and management
• Training
• Motivational strategies(incentive, awareness, mission/vision of organization)
• Proper work/rest schedule
• Proper working conditions
HOW MANAGEMENT
TECHNIQUES CAN REDUCE
EXCESS WORK CONTENT
