GCSE Welcome Gate

The academy has produced guidelines on what

they expect to see in high-quality Science
teaching resources.
Resources are engaging and relevant to
the curriculum and GCSE specifications
Coherent and connected, showing clear progression
from one topic to another whilst offering
opportunities for exploration and investigation
Include comprehensive and appropriate
vocabulary
We address misconceptions
We support mastery of skills and provide
opportunities to apply them to a range of
problems
Understanding of the nature, processes and
methods of education is embedded in
resources
Includes varied activities that require pupils to
comment on data, to draw conclusions, make
generalisations and offer reasoned arguments
Where appropriate, resources provide
school/home and out-of-school activities
Illustrations and contexts used are relevant
Both live sessions and digital materials have a
coherent and consistent approach and
reinforce one another
We consider our textbooks and online resources to be part of one complete GCSE
Science offer. They are created to fully support and interact with each other.

Examples include:
• Textbook ‘Prior knowledge’ boxes linked to online intervention and remedial
worksheets.
• Interactive quizzes that link to our Student eTextbooks.
• In-depth practical and maths videos that fully support the AQA Required
Practical tasks in the textbooks.
• Topic overview PPTs that reflect key learning in the textbooks.
Teacher’s guide or other teacher material
should support the enhancement of
teacher knowledge and pedagogy
Our online resources offer a wealth of support for both experienced teachers
and those teaching outside their specialism. They include:
• Guidance on linear assessment and synoptic teaching and learning.
• Treatment of misconceptions and topic specific pedagogy.
• Support for integrating differentiation in the classroom.
• Specific sections on engaging with the literacy and mathematical demand of
the new GCSEs.
• Revision and exam preparation and resources to track student progress.
• Simple lesson plans for each topic.
• Guidance for non-specialist teachers.
Support teachers delivering science outside
of their own specialism
Resources provide insight into the science activities
the pupils are engaging in, key learning that should
be developed, guidance on how to address
misconceptions and support for maths and literacy
skills
Opportunities for both formative and summative
assessment, to review learning and
understanding and to measure progress
