TRADITIONAL HOUSING
 In most cases “TRADITIONAL” Houses built during 20th Century will mix various elements
deawn from colonial , farmhouse and neoclassical style. That being said many, “MODERN”
Traditional homes will incorporate contemporary interpretations of historic elements.
 TRADITIONAL HOMES are generally known as simple, elegant and
welcoming . Because their understated looks blend in seamlessely in just about any location ,
traditional homes can be found in cities, suburbs and rural areas . No matter where you are ,
traditional –style houses always look like they are in the right place.
WHAT MAKES A HOUSE
TRADITIONAL STYLE?
 A traditional - style home’s design combines characteristics from one or more historical
architectural styles, primarily those of the 17th and centuries
. The exterior of a traditional house –style home is warm and inviting , and
their unique mix of historic architecture style gives them a screen, classical beauty . Rooflines
are simple and unobtrusive, and almost always feature atleast one front facing gable.
CHAWAL IN MUMBAI
 A chawal is a type of residential building found in western India , Similar to a teniment.
Typically low quality housing, Chawls are generally assosiated with poverty. The first chawl
were constructed in early 1700s as housing for industrial workers.
 These were tiny one room apartments shared by upto 5 people being highly
congested , unsanitary and unsafe . Despite piir sanitation and living conditions chawls are
often seen as “middle class” housing and rare often more affordable than much of the housing
in Mumbai. Some chawls have shops or buisness incorporated in their structure . Residents of
chawls sometimes cute a sense of community where everything is shared amongst themselves;
The cramped design of chawls forces social interaction between residents and often very
special occasions such as wedding, or religious festivals are celebrated communally.
MOHOLLA IN NORTH INDIA
 The origin of word
“MOHOLLA” widely used in the Islamic world including North India, is said to be the Arabic
word moholla,Which originally ,means “a place where one makes a halt . It is also common
word in hindi, meaning quarteror neighbourhood.
 The moholla is a traditional neighbourhood unit common in North Indian cities.moholla were
elemental components of the city in the Mughal period as administrative tax units as well as
autonomous organizations .
 Mohollas were headed by chiefs or mohulladars and fuctioned as organizing units for social
activities such as celebrations, festivals and negotiations with city authorities

walled with thatched roof
 They are known for their structural stability in earthquakes and being for climate responsive.
 It is constructed using locally available materials like clay, bamboo, timber, e.t.c
