COMMON LAW
Laws that are created when a judge makes a ruling about a
case that is not covered by statutory law

Happens when statutory law is not clear about how a case


should be resolved

Based on precedent: follow past decisions by other judges


PRECEDENT
A decision made by a judge in a previous case which is used
as a guide for making a decision in a similar case
PARLIAMENT ROLE PLAY
Situation:
Toilets being vandalised or left in a mess, students asking to go to
the toilet and missing a lot of class, students hanging around in the
toilets and being late etc.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Groups of 4
2. Create 2 different plans to deal with the situation above. Explain
each part of your plan in detail
3. Flip a coin – winner is the government
4. Prepare speeches to support or criticise the government’s plan
5. Act out a debate and vote on the plan. Follow the steps in the
image on the right
