Project shop
Introduction
The manufacturing system differ in structure
or physical arrangement. According to the
physical arrangement there are four kinds of
classical manufacturing system and two
modern manufacturing system that is rapidly
gaining acceptance in industries.
The classical systems are :-
1, job shop
2, flow shop
3, project shop
4, continous process
The modern system are :-
1, linked cell system(cellular manufacturing
system)
2, flexible manufacturing facturing
system(FMS)
Project shop
 Which is one type of a classical
manufacturing system in this type a product
must remain in a fixed position or location
because of its size and weight . The
materials , machines and people in
fabrication are brought to site .The layout is
also called as fixed position layout .
Example :- large aircraft assembly and
ship building
Material and information flow in project
shop
 We have to bring the material to the work place if we have
multiple work places , all material has to go to all work places
this will be a mess.
 I deally we would provide a complete set of parts of the work
place before the worker starts working on a how product . for
a project shop the material needs to go a different station
each time and if the supply is late it is likely that work is
interapted . Even worse it may be possible that the wrong
parts gets installed.
 Hence it is much more demanding and complex for the
material logistics , which is an other way of saying that thing
will go wrong frequently .such project shop are known for
frequent missing material resulting in delay , rush order and
overall inefficiencis.
Sequence :-
 In an assembly line it is easy too keep production sequence .
We simply order the processes in sequence we want them. In
project shop however the worker have to make sure that the
sequence is right . If multiple workers work on the same car it
is easy to atach parts out of sequence . If we install the door
cover of a car, it will be no longer possible to install the wiring
be behind the door panel . We would have to remove the door
panel again install the wires and attach the panel again.
The problems with project shops
There are multiple difficulties when implementing a project
shop.. We have to get the material to the site , we have to get
the information to the site and we must not mix up the
sequence.
Advantage and Disadvantage of
project shop lay out
Advantage of project shop layout
 Minimum capital investment
 Continuity of operation
 Less production cost
 Offer greater flexibility
 Allows the change in production design
 Permits a plant to elevate the skill of its operation

Disadvantage of project shop lay out

 Machines , tools and workers take move time to reach the

fixed position
 Highly skill workers are required
 Complicated jigs and fixture (work holding device) may be

required.
