HOW TO SOLVE IT

A new aspect of mathematical method

PATRICIA CAMILA D. BARON BSED-MATH 3A
Devising a plan
 When you devise a plan, you come up with a way to solve the
problem. Setting up an equation, drawing a diagram and making
a chart are all ways that you can go about solving a problem.
DEVISING A PLAN
 Make a representation
- draw a diagram
- make a systematic list
- use equations

 Make a calculated guess

- guess and check
- look for a pattern
- make suppositions
DEVISING A PLAN
 Go through the process
- act it out
- work backwards
 Revise the problem
- restate the problem
- simplify the problem
- solve part of the problem
Example 1:

30
18
2
?
Step 1: Understanding the Problem

 Shapes represents number

 The first three equations are clues

 Find the missing numbers to solve the last equation

Step 2: Devising a plan
 Use variables to represent the shapes and missing value
Let t = c= s= x = missing value

t + t + t = 30
t + c + c = 18

c–s =2
t+c+s=x

 Algebraic expression
Step 3: Carry out the plan
Solution:
t + t + t = 30 t + c + c = 18

c–s =2
4–s=2
4–2=2
s=2
c–s =2
4–s=2
4–2=2
s=2

t+c+s=x
10 + 4 + 2 = x
x = 16
Step 4: Looking back and check answer
t = 10 c = 4 s=2 x = 16
t + t + t = 30 t+c+s=x
10 + 10 + 10 = 30 10 + 4 + 2 = 16
30 = 30 16 = 16

t + c + c = 18
10 + 4 + 4 = 18
18 = 18

c–s =2
4–2=2
2=2
