A report tackling the rapid population growth in the Philippines
RAPID POPULATION GROWTH [RPG]

Rapid population growth is defined as a

significant increase in a population over a short
period of time. It is a global phenomenon that has
been taking place for several decades and
continues to be a concern today.
RAPID POPULATION GROWTH
Global View

The world's population has been growing at an unprecedented rate, with the number of people on the planet
doubling in the last 50 years.

The current world population is over 7.9 billion and is projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050.
RAPID POPULATION

Local View
The Philippines has experienced rapid population
growth in recent decades. As of 2021, the population of
the Philippines is over 108 million.

This rapid population growth has led to a number of

challenges for the country, including increased demand
for housing, healthcare, and education, as well as strain
on the country's natural resources.
Although, according on the annual State of World Population (SWP)
RAPID POPULATION
report, the Philippines’ population grew by a slower rate of 1.4 percent
GROWTH every year from 2015 to 2020, it is still among the highest in Southeast
Asia and higher than economic powerhouses United States and China.

CAUSES OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

High fertility rates

The Philippines has one of the highest fertility rates in Southeast Asia, which has led to a
significant increase in population.
CAUSES OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

Cultural and religious beliefs

Many religious beliefs in the Philippines hold that life is sacred, and that it is a sin to prevent
or end a pregnancy.

Many Filipino families see children as a source of security and support, both financially and
emotionally.

The influence of the Catholic Church is a powerful force in the Philippines and has
historically been opposed to the use of birth control.

CAUSES OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

Urbanization and migration

Urbanization, the process of people moving from rural areas to urban areas, can lead to
population growth in cities. As more people move to cities, the population of those cities
increases.

Migration, the process of people moving from one place to another, can also affect population
growth. International migration, where people move from one country to another, can lead
to population growth in the destination country.
CAUSES OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

Urbanization and migration

In the Philippines, the country is experiencing rapid urbanization. According to the Philippine
Statistics Authority, in 2020, around 57% of the population lived in urban areas. This is a
significant increase from the 42% of the population living in urban areas in 2000.
CAUSES OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

Urbanization and migration

CAUSES OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

Lack of education and awareness

Many people, especially in rural areas and among lower-income groups, do not have access to
family planning and contraceptive options, which leads to higher birth rates.

Individuals who are not educated about the availability and use of family planning and
contraceptive methods may not have access to the information they need to make informed
decisions about their reproductive health. This can lead to unintended pregnancies and rapid
population growth.

Without access to accurate and reliable information, individuals may not be aware of the
options available to them or may be misinformed about the effectiveness or safety of different
methods. This can lead to a lack of use of family planning and contraceptive methods and an
increase in unintended pregnancies.
CAUSES OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

Lack of education and awareness

CAUSES OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

The advancement of Science and Technology

With the help of the Science and Technology, people have continously to develop
pharmaceutical products for priority health problems, better health and attainment of long
life.
These have decreased the death rate and increased the life expectancy of Filipinos.

EFFECTS OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

Depletion of natural resources

As the population grows, it becomes increasingly difficult to sustain the country's resources,
leading to a shortage of water, food, housing and energy.
EFFECTS OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

Loss in biodiversity and increased in pollution

As natural habitats are detroyed, many species of plants and animals are becoming extincts.
RPG, furthermore, leads to increased in pollution and deforestation.
EFFECTS OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

Disrupts Peace and Order

Due to big population, unemployment, hunger, homelessness, sickness and frustrations,
many people resort to illegal and criminal acts just to survive. This leads to a rise in
criminality that endangers the peace and security of the country
EFFECTS OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

Increased in poverty and inequality

As the population grows, the number of people competing for jobs and resources can outstrip the
number of available job opportunities and opportunities, leading to higher rates of poverty and
inequality.
EFFECTS OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

Overcrowding and strain on infrastructure

As populations grow, cities become more
crowded, leading to strain on infrastructure
such as housing, transportation, and healthcare.

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and the

National Development Plan (NDP)
1. Education and Skills Development Program - the Education and Skills Development
Program aims to provide quality education and training opportunities to Filipinos, especially
the youth, to enhance their employment prospects and improve their quality of life.

2. Family Planning and Reproductive Health (FP/RH) Program - the FP/RH Program
promotes responsible parenthood and access to quality family planning services to help
families achieve their desired number and spacing of children.

3. Philippine Development Plan (PDP) - a comprehensive plan for national development that
outlines the country's development goals and strategies.
PH GOVERNMENT APPROACH TO RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

Executive Order No. 12 or the "Full Implementation of the Responsible

Parenthood and Reproductive Health Law" 2012
This law aims to provide universal access to modern methods of family planning and
reproductive health services, information, and education. The order also calls for the
promotion of natural family planning methods, as well as the strengthening of the national
health system, particularly in providing maternal and child health services. The EO 12 also
created the Inter-Agency Committee on Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health,
tasked to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the law, and to resolve issues and
concerns arising from its implementation.

PH GOVERNMENT APPROACH TO RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

The Philippine Population Management Program (PPMP)

This program was implemented in the 1990s and aims to provide universal access to
reproductive health services, information, and education to Filipinos. The PPMP focuses on
the provision of family planning services, including natural and modern methods of
contraception, as well as maternal and child health services.

The PPMP also implements a "demand-side financing" strategy, which aims to increase the
use of family planning services by making them more accessible and affordable, particularly
to poor and marginalized communities.
PH GOVERNMENT APPROACH TO RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

Migration Management Programs

The government has also implemented and maintained a migration management program to
better manage the influx of people moving to urban areas and to the Philippines in general.
This includes the establishment of the Bureau of Immigration and the Philippine Overseas
Employment Administration (POEA) which are responsible for managing the migration of
Filipinos abroad.

growth is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach, and individuals
can play a significant role in supporting efforts to slow population growth
through their own actions and by raising awareness and advocating for change.

APPROACH TO RAPID
POPULATION GROWTH
OTHER COUNTRIES' GOVERNEMNT APPROACH TO RAPID
POPULATION GROWTH

China
. China, implemented one-child policy, which limited the number of children that families
could have. This policy was successful in slowing population growth and helped to alleviate
the strain on resources

India
India, implemented a National Population Policy in 2000, which aimed to provide access to
family planning services and education, as well as to promote gender equality and the
empowerment of women. The policy also included incentives for small families and
disincentives for large families.
OTHER COUNTRIES' GOVERNEMNT APPROACH TO RAPID
POPULATION GROWTH

Iran
Iran, implemented a two-child policy in the late 1990s and provided access to family planning
services and education, as well as incentives for small families and disincentives for large
families. This policy was successful in slowing population growth and reducing the strain on
resources.

Indonesia
Indonesia, implemented a family planning program in the 1970s which aimed to provide
access to family planning services and education, as well as to promote gender equality and
the empowerment of women. The program was successful in reducing the country's fertility
rate and slowing population growth.
OTHER COUNTRIES' GOVERNEMNT APPROACH TO RAPID
POPULATION GROWTH

Bangladesh
Bangladesh implemented a program called "Matritto Biddan (Mother and Child Health)"
which aimed to improve maternal and child health, and promote the use of family planning
services. Additionally, the country invested in family planning education and services, which
helped to reduce fertility rates.

Thailand
Thailand implemented a program called "100% Condom Use Program" which aimed to reduce
the spread of HIV/AIDS and promote the use of condoms as a method of family planning.
This program, along with education and access to contraceptives, helped to slow population
growth in the country.
However, it's worth noting that these are just a few examples, and the specific
approach that a country takes to address rapid population growth will depend on
a variety of factors, including its cultural, economic, and political context.
Additionally, it's important to consider the potential negative consequences of
population control policies, such as human rights violations and unintended
consequences on the society.
