UROLOGY
Urology (from Greek οὖρον ouron "urine" and -λογία
-logia "study of"), also known as genitourinary surgery, is
the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and
medical diseases of the urinary-tract system and the
reproductive organs. Organs under the domain of urology
include the kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters,
urinary bladder, urethra, and the male reproductive organs
(testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles,
prostate, and penis).
The urinary and reproductive tracts are closely linked, and
disorders of one often affect the other. Thus a major
spectrum of the conditions managed in urology exists
under the domain of genitourinary disorders. Urology
combines the management of medical (i.e., non-surgical)
conditions, such as urinary-tract infections and
benign prostatic hyperplasia, with the management of
surgical conditions such as bladder or prostate cancer,
kidney stones, congenital abnormalities, traumatic injury,
and stress incontinence
PROCEDURES OF THE UROLOGY
When you see a urologist they may perform a
variety of urology procedures to diagnose
and treat urologic conditions.
•Vasectomy. This is a common urology procedure that
many men get. ...
•Vasectomy Reversal. ...
•Cystoscopy. ...
•Prostate Procedures. ...
•Ureteroscopy. ...
•Lithotripsy. ...
•Orchiopexy. ...
•Penile Plication.
UROLOGIST
RESPONSIBILITIES
•Examining, diagnosing, and treating patient conditions and
disorders of the genitourinary organs and tracts.
•Documenting and reviewing patients' histories.
•Ordering, performing, and interpreting diagnostic tests.
•Using specialized equipment, such as X-rays, fluoroscopes,
and catheters.
•Performing abdominal, pelvic, or retroperitoneal surgeries
when necessary.
•Treating lower urinary tract dysfunctions.
•Prescribing and administering antibiotics, antiseptics, or
compresses to treat infections or injuries.
•Prescribing medications for patients with erectile dysfunction,
infertility, or ejaculation problems.
•Providing Urology consultations or referring patients to
specialists.
•Directing nurses, residents, or other staff.
MAJOR EQUIPMENTS OF UROLOGY
Urologic surgical procedures include circumcision, cystoscopy, and
cryotherapy. Specialty instruments commonly used in these and other urology
procedures include dilators, probes, clamps, needles, retractors, forceps,
scopes, and scissors
CENTRAL STERILIZATION AND SUPPLY DEPARTMENT
INTRODUCTION
PSG Hospitals has well equipped modern central sterilization and supply department
(CSSD), which caters to the needs of patients and health care workers in the hospital. CSSD is the
nerve center of the hospitals which ensure safety to the patients who are undergoing various
surgical and non surgical procedures in the hospital. Sterilization is a process by which an article
surface or medium is made free from microbes and their products; hence sterilization of surgical
instruments and other equipments used on patients should be sterilized so that the patients do not
acquire infection.
PROCESS OF CSSD
The Sterile Processing Department (SPD), also known as the
Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), is the area in a
hospital where cleaning and sterilization of devices used in
medical procedures takes place. The processes an instrument
goes through in the CSSD depends on its use, material
construction, and other factors. Typically, an instrument coming
from the Operating Room arrives at the Decontamination area to
be manually cleaned, then placed in a large ultrasonic cleaner
or sonic irrigator before being placed into a
washer/disinfector. Next, the instrument would be transported
to a Prep & Pack area to be prepared for sterilization. It will then
be sterilized through one of many types of sterilization
processes. Once sterilized, the instrument will either be sent back
to a procedure room to be used again, or into sterile storage until
it is needed again for a procedure. Sterile Processing Department
Technicians are required to wear Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE) as a safety precaution to prevent exposure to potentially
infectious bacteria.1
AIM OF THE CSSD
The aim of a CSSD is to provide all OT,wards and OPD
adequate supply of sterilized
surgical instruments set, dressing set, linen packs correctly
prepared by CSSD Trained
staff for routine and emergency use, from a CSSD where
bacteriologically safe
sterilization is conducted, under controlled conditions and
at minimum possible cost.
This in turn benefits the patients standardized
packs,assists users and contributes
reduction in the incidence of hospital cross infection
OBEJECTIVES &FUNCTION OF CSSD
To provide supplies of sterile linen packs basins, instruments other sterile items.

·           To maintain an accurate record of the effectiveness of the cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing process
·           To  monitor  and  enforce  control necessary to prevent cross infection according to infection control policies.
·           To review current practice for possible improvement in quality or service provided.
·           To provide consulting services to other departments in all areas of sterile processing.
·           CSSD is the hospital central nervous system where the battle against infection takes place.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF CSSD
Develop a procedure manual to document SOPs for all processes carried
out in the CSSD. The manual should be approved by the HICC and reviewed
at regular intervals.
 Oversee the various processes carried out in the department, namely
cleaning, decontamination, disinfection, wrapping, sterilization, storage and
distribution.
 Monitor the processes by use of different methods such as physical,
chemical and bacteriological according to the policy of the HCF.
 Ensure technical maintenance of the equipment according to national
standards and manufacturers’ recommendations.
 Report any defect to the administration, maintenance, infection control
and other appropriate personnel.
 Ensure appropriate separation of “clean” and “dirty” areas.
 Maintain complete records of each sterilizer run and preserve records as
per standard recommendations.
 Organize collection of all outdated sterile units at regular intervals.
 Communicate, as needed, with the IPC team, the nursing service, the OT,
the hospital transport service, pharmacy service, maintenance and other
appropriate services
LOCATION OF CSSD
The CSSD should be close to the casualty, Operation
Theatre and wards which are the largest consumer of the
sterilized material. In multistoried buildings, CSSD may be
planned in the lower floor right under the Operation
Theatre, where vertical movement will be the quickest
possible movement of the material.
FLOOR SPACE OF CSSD
The CSSD should be close to the casualty, Operation
Theatre and wards which are the largest consumer of the
sterilized material. In multistoried buildings, CSSD may be
planned in the lower floor right under the Operation
Theatre, where vertical movement will be the quickest
possible movement of the material.

Sterile processing departments are typically divided into

four major areas to accomplish the functions
of decontamination, assembly and sterile processing,
sterile storage, and distribution.
