Table of Areas Under the Normal

Curve is also known as z-Table
In-class Activity 2

Example:
1. Find the area that corresponds to z = 1.
Steps Solution
1. Express the given into a three-digit Z = 1.00
form.
2. In the table, find the Row z = 1.0
3. In the table, find the Column with
the heading .00.
4. Read the area (or probability) at the This area is 0.3413.
intersection of Row 1.0 and the Column This is the required
.00. area. (34.13%)
In-class Activity 2
Example:
2. Find the area that corresponds to z = 1.36.
0.4131
3. Find the area that corresponds to z = -2.58.

Four-Step Process in Finding the Areas
Under the Normal Curve Given a z-Value
Step 1. Express the given z-value into a three-
digit form.
Step 2. Using the z-Table, find the first two
digits on the left column.
Step 3. Match the third digit with the
appropriate column on the right.
Step 4. Read the area (or probability) at the
intersection of the row and the column. This is
the required area.
In-class Activity 2

z- The areas under the normal curve are given in

terms of z-values or scores. Either the z-score
score locates X within a sample or within a population.

The formula for calculating z is:

(z-score for (z-score for
population data) sample data)

where: X = given measurement

μ = population mean
σ = population standard deviation
X = sample mean
s = sample standard deviation
In-class Activity 2
Example:
1. Reading Scores
Given the mean, μ = 50 and the standard deviation, σ = 4 of a population
of Reading scores. Find the z-value that corresponds to a score X = 58

Steps Solution
1. Use the computing formula for
finding z-scores of population data.
2. Check the given values. Since there μ = 50, σ = 4, and X = 58.
are population values, the z-scores
locates X within a population
3. Substitute the given values in the
computing formula.
4. Compute the z-value.
Thus, the z-value that
corresponds to the raw score 58
is 2 in a population distribution.
In-class Activity 2
Example:
This conversion from raw score to z-score is shown
graphically below.

-3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
38 42 46 50 54 58 62
In-class Activity 2
Example:

2. Score in P.E.
Locate the z-value that corresponds to a PE score 39
given that μ = 45 and σ = 6.

Z = -1
2. Score in a Science Test
Given X = 20, X = 26 and s = 4. Compute the
corresponding z-score.

Z = -1.5

What are the properties of the Normal

Distribution?

What are the four-step process in finding the

Areas Under the Normal Curve Given a z-value
1 WHOLE:
A. State whether the z-score locates the raw
score X within a sample or within a
population.
1. X = 50, s = 5, X = 40 B. Find the z-
score value that
2. X = 40, σ = 8, μ = 52 corresponds to
each of the
following scores
3. X = 36, s = 6, X = 28 up to two
decimal places.
4. X = 82, σ = 15, μ = 75
Group Activity:

A. Find the z-value in the z-table (15s)

1. 0.45 4. 0.03
2. 2.58 5. 1.50

3. 1.05 6. 0.30
Do it Yourself!

A. True or False
1. The normal curve is a bell-shaped
probability distribution.
2. At the base of the normal curve, there
are six standard deviations expressed as z.
3. The mean and the standard deviation of a
normal distribution is 0 and 1, respectively.
4. The tails of the curve touches the baseline so
that the curve can cover 100% of the area under it.
