 1. The Taj Mahal

• The Taj Mahal is an immense mausoleum of white marble.

• It was built in Agra between 1631 and 1648 by the order of the
Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.
• It is the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally
admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage.
• It was built in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal.
• The Taj Mahal consists of the mosque, the guest house and the
main gateway on the south, the outer courtyard and its cloisters
were added subsequently and completed in 1653.

 2. The India Gate

• The iconic India Gate, an arch gate made using sandstone,

is a war memorial situated in the Rajpath area, Delhi.
• The foundation stone of India Gate was laid by His Royal
Highness, the Duke of Connaught in 1921 and it was
designed by Edwin Lutyens.
• The monument was dedicated to the nation 10 years later
by the then Viceroy, Lord Irwin.
• Another memorial, Amar Jawan Jyoti was added much
later, after India got it’s Independence.
