Atmosphere and

Human activities-Lets
Revise
Objectives:-

 To evaluate conditions in the layers in atmosphere.

 To solve questions related to Atmospheric layers and composition.
Introduction:

 Name the layers of atmosphere in order.

Temperature and pressure-
 Although it extends upto 10,000km above
the earth, 97 percent of the atmospheric
mass is within 30 km of earth surface.
 Atmospheric pressure decrease rapidly with
height
 The different layers , which are identified
mainly by temperature characteristics, are
named as- troposphere, stratosphere,
mesosphere,thermosphere,exosphere.
 The two that are important for us and life
are-troposphere, stratosphere
Mini plenary

 Name the structural layers of the atmosphere. In which layer is ozone layer
located?
 Enlist the gases present in the atmosphere.
COMPOSITION OF ATMOSPHERE
COMPONENT % in Importance to life on Earth.
Atmosphere
Composition of the Atmosphere
Permanent gases • Growth of plants.
Nitrogen(N2) 78.09 • Produced by photosynthesis & used in respiration.
Oxygen(O2) 20.95
Variable gases • Source for all types of precipitation.
Water vapour(H2O) 0.2-4 • Used by plants, Green house gas.
Carbondioxide(CO2) 0.03 • Absorbs UV radiation.
Ozone(O3) 0.00006
Inert gases Create an inert atmosphere that protects materials from
Argon(Ar) 0.93 reacting with oxygen or other gases.
Helium(He),Neon(Ne),Kry Trace
pton(Kr)
Non gaseous particles Trace • Absorbs and reflects incoming short wave radiation.
Dust • Water vapour condenses on particles, forming droplets
or ice crystals(cloud formation)

Pollutants Trace Can lead to smog, acid rain, ozone depletion and the

Sulfur dioxide, nitrogen enhanced green house effect.
dioxide,methane

 4 (a) Complete the following passage about the gases which make up the
Earth’s atmosphere, by filling in the missing words.
 The Earth’s atmosphere is a mixture of gases. The most abundant gas
 is.................................. followed by ......................... . A gas which makes up less
than 0.04% of the atmosphere but from which plants make food
is ........................High up in the atmosphere is the ..................... layer which
absorbs UV radiation from the Sun.
Activities:-
ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION-Revision

 To describe the causes and impacts of various air pollutions.

 To solve past paper question related to air pollution.
Starter

 List the Air Pollutions that you learned.

TEAMS-BREAK OUT ROOMS

 ROOM 1- Causes and impacts of Acid Rain.

 ROOM 2- Causes and impacts of Ozone depletion
 ROOM 3- Causes and impacts of Smog
 ROOM 4- Causes and impacts of Enhanced green house affect.
DISCUSSION
How is it formed?

 Acid Rain is formed when nitric oxide (NOX) and sulfur dioxide (SO2 )
is emitted by industrial plants and transportation vehicles, such as cars and
trucks ,rises into the atmosphere and chemically reacts with gaseous water vapor in to
sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and Nitric acid (HNO3).
 The clouds then form water vapor which is acidic in nature which is less than 5.6
pH – (Normal rain pH ranges from 5.6-5.8).
 These clouds then travel until conditions allow them to precipitate the acid rain on
the land below.
Smog is a mixture of Smoke and fog.
Causes of Smog-

 Nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds –that combine

with sunlight
 Major smog occurrences often are linked to heavy motor vehicles
traffic , high temperatures, sunshine and calm winds .
 Weather and Geography affect the location and severity of smog ,
as temperature regulates the length of time it takes for smog to
form
Green house effect

 The Process by which atmospheric gases

absorb heat energy from the sun and prevent
heat from leaving our atmosphere.
 In other words, greenhouse gases trap heat
energy and keep it close to earth.
 3 Main Natural Greenhouse Gases: CARBON
DIOXIDE (CO2), Methane, and WATER
VAPOR

ENHANCED GREEN HOUSE EFFECT

 WHAT IS ENHANCED GREEN

HOUSE EFFECT ?
It is created by the addition of greenhouse
gases to the atmosphere through human
activities.
It results in more heat being retained in the
atmosphere and increase in the Earth’s
temperature ------ global warming------
global climate change.

The increase in the gases is due to the human

activities.
