IFUGAO
• The Ifugao people inhabit the most rugged and
mountainous part of the country, high up in the
central Cordillera in northern Luzon.

IFUGAO
• The term “Ifugao” is composed of the prefix i
meaning “people of” and pugaw meaning “the
cosmic earth.” It could also have been derived
from the term ipugo, which means “from the
hill.” Ifugao mythology, however, says that ipugo
is a type of rice grain given to the people by
Matungulan, the god of grains.

“BUMAYAH DANCE”
History

•  Imbajah (also called Bumayah), is an Ifugao


held to propitiate gods to watch over the crops
and ensure a bountiful harvest.
• An Ifugao dance of thanksgiving to the god
Kabunian. In this dance, performed by both
men and women, the movements mimic those
of a rooster scratching the ground.
• This joyful dance serves as a prayer of
thanksgiving for a beautiful rice harvest.

Attire
• Lamma – white sleeveless blouse with red trimmings.
• Tolge (tapis) – striped wrap skirt
• Botong – cloth belt with size pompoms
• Headdress of round framed wrapped with red cloth and
strips of bamboo tipped with white feathers (strung beads
for the lower class).
• Wanoh – red and dark blue stripped G-string.
• Gamong – blanket sash draped on one shoulder
• Ginuttu – carabao bone belt
• Pinukla – tasseled side bag tucked to the side of the G-
string
• Kango – bamboo or rattan headdress adorned with hornbil
skull and feathers
