Did you know?
• A home to more than a
hundred volcanoes and energy
has been tapped from them.
Did you know?
• According to the Department of
Energy, 14.4% of the country’s
total power generation is
produced from geothermal energy.
Geothermal Energy
• Comes from the word “geo”
which means Earth and
“therme” which means heat.
Geothermal Energy
• It is the energy from Earth’s heat.
• In the context of society, it refers to
the portion of this heat that is
available for human exploitation.

Geothermal System
• is a natural heat transfer within a
confined volume of the Earth's
crust where heat is transported
from a heat source to a heat sink,
usually the free surface.
Geothermal System
• Surface manifestations of this
process may be hot springs,
geysers, and mud volcanoes.
There are three main elements of
Geothermal Energy.

•HEAT SOURCE- which can

be in the form of magmatic
intrusion
There are Three Main Elements of
Geothermal Energy.

•RESERVOIR- which refers to the

layers of permeable rock capped by
impermeable rock but is connected
to a surficial recharge area
There are Three Main Elements of
Geothermal Energy.

•GEOTHERMAL FLUID- usually
occurs in the form of water or meteoric
water which can be liquid or steam
depending on the temperature and
pressure conditions.
• The mechanism underlying geothermal
systems is by and large governed by Fluid
convection.
• The mechanism in the case of an
intermediate temperature hydrothermal
system.
• Convection occurs because of the heating
and consequent thermal expansion of fluids
in a gravity field; heat, which is supplied at
the base of the circulation system, is the
energy that drives the system.
• Heated fluid of lower density tends to rise
and to be replaced by colder fluid of high
density, coming from the margins of the
system. Convection, by its nature, tends to
increase temperatures in the upper part of a
system as temperatures in the lower part
decrease.
