Polymerization

Techniques
- PAWAN JADHAV
Polymerization

• Process through which a large number of monomer molecules react

together to form a polymer.
• Ex –
Bulk Polymerization

• This method involves only the monomer

molecule, an initiator and a chain transfer
agent ( if necessary).
• Monomer is taken in liquid state and soluble
initiator is added .
• The initiator should dissolve in the monomer.
• The chain transfer agents whenever used to
control the molecular weight, is also dissolved
in the monomer.
• Therefore the whole system is in a homogenous phase.
• The reaction mass is heated or exposed to light source for initiating the
polymerization and kept under agitation for proper mass and heat
transfer .
• As the polymerization proceeds, the viscosity of the medium increases
and mixing become progressively difficult, leading to a broad
molecular weight distribution.
• The product of polymerization obtained is the purest form of polymer,
and the greatest yield of polymer per unit volume.
Example
The free radical
polymerization of
styrene or methyl
methacrylate to get
transparent moulding
powder and cast sheets.
Advantages & Disadvantages

Advantages Disadvantages
• The system is simple and requires • Heat transfer and mixing become
thermal insulation. difficult as the viscosity of reaction
• The polymer obtained is pure. mass increases.
• Large castings may be prepared directly. • Reaction is highly exothermic .
• Molecular weight distribution can be • Product obtained are of varying length
easily changed and molecular weight .
• The product obtained has high optical • Termination of chain becomes difficult
