Archaebacteria
Kingdom: Archaebacteria

The word archaea is derived from the Greek for ancient ones and refers to a group of
single-celled organisms distinct from bacteria and eukaryotes. Fossil and genetic evidence
indicate that the first living organisms on Earth were most similar to modern archaea.
Although archaea have been found in a wide variety of habitats, the domain is most notable
for members that thrive under extreme environmental conditions.
