Problem Statement

Preparing a Machine Learning Project on Pothole Detection by
analyzing the different techniques and methods being used earlier to
that, of the technologies being developed in today’s modernizing
world in creating a futuristic safety efficient car. Motive of this
project is to include the pothole detection system in the existing
ADAS model. Comparing the different image processing techniques
and machine learning algorithm respectively.
OVERVIEW ON ADAS
•Advanced driver assistance systems are designed to
increase car safety more generally road safety.

•Basically Advanced driver assists(ADS) systems helps

the driver in the driving process and enables safe,
relaxed driving. It makes sense to get your new car
with driver assist features if you find it at a reasonable
price as it helps you drive easily and safely in everyday
use.
Applications
Features of ADAS
▪ Warning Features
• Forward collision warning and lane departure warning.
• Blind spot detection features are a must for frequent
highway drivers.
• Drowsy driver detection.
▪ Driver Convenience
• Adaptive headlights improve your visibility and show
hazards in areas around a vehicle.
• ADAS calibration is essential when any damage occurs.
▪ Automated Assistance
• Adaptive cruise control.
• Automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assistance
prevent collisions in stop-and-go traffic.
POT-HOLE DETECTION
What is pothole detection
What:
A system that utilizes a camera and embedded laser sensors to detect the
potholes, primarily used on highways to provide a swift and safe drive .

Why:
To improve passenger safety by providing warnings and avoid
unnecessary accidents.

Benefits:
Decrease in accidents / injuries / deaths caused by sudden
unprecedented potholes on the road.
Issues and Resolutions
▪ About 70% of the road accidents in Kerala takes place due to
improper construction of roads and due to unpredictable weather
conditions in Kerala .
▪ With our system the irregularities in roads can be detected and
informed ,therefore the road accidents can be reduced to a certain
extend.
▪ Need of such a safety providing system is becoming essential for
current scenario.
▪ Currently no such devices are available in the market .
Types of pothole detection method
▪ 3D RECONSTRUCTION BASED POTHOLE DETECTION
range sensors or by stereo-vision. time consuming, costly, lack
of accuracy.
▪ VIBRATION BASED POTHOLE DETECTION
vibration-based sensor like accelerometer. It is time
consuming, costly, lack of accuracy.
▪ VISUAL POTHOLE DETECTION
this is automated system.
▪ MANUAL POTHOLE DETECTION
using GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar)- very hectic, laborious, very
costly.

▪ SMARTPHONE SENSING
Using accelerometer and GPS for detection and reporting live
location of pothole.
Methodology
▪ Potholes detected through a newly developed optical
device mounted on a vehicle ( like camera module or
laser sensor ).
▪ Data is collected and pothole is detected using the
proposed algorithm.
▪ This system includes a vehicle ( where devices can be
mounted ), an optical device and a pothole detection
algorithm.
Proposed Algorithm
▪ VIDEO DATA COLLECTION
▪ K-MEANS CLUSTERING
▪ RANDOM FOREST
▪ SUPPORT VECTOR MACHINE (SVM)
▪ BIT DEPTH FORMAT CONVERSION
▪ ADAPTIVE THRESHOLDING
▪ MORPHOLOGICAL EROSION OPERATION
▪ MORPHOLOGICAL DILATION OPERATION
▪ COMPUTATION OF AREA

Literature Review

◈ The current working models are aptly inheritable but with some inconsistency or
false detection in some scenarios. Whereas, pothole detection lags far behind the
approach having major drawbacks of costly sensor and complex techniques. There
are multiple factor considered while detecting the image such as distance from the
vehicle, speed of the vehicle, etc.
◈ The accidents can be averted by increasing the accuracy of the algorithms and using
efficient techniques in training the models to get the instant output.
◈ The pothole problem is mainly a part of countries with massive population like India,
China, Ireland, etc., whereas there is slight chances of potholes in nations like
America. Mainly the South India region where the accidents due to the pothole is
about 24% and can cause death.
◈ Our aim is to create an algorithm with high accuracy, considering the factors in mind that the
pothole might not be detected if filled with water, inaccuracy in calculating the depth of the
pothole, low light condition or hinderance of light or a shadow can be misunderstood as a pothole
or maybe it won’t even detect the pothole due to over speeding.
◈ Algorithms like k-means clustering unsupervised learning and random forest classifier are some of
the best suitable algorithms used for pothole detection with maximum accuracy of 99% by k-means
clustering.
Conclusion

◈ The need for up-to-date road network data requires the use of
vehicles as probes.
◈ Situational awareness can provide data relevant
to driver workload.
◈ To find the optimized algorithm for the pot hole detection with better
efficiency.
◈ ADAS have the potential to remove human error from the equation on
the journey to zero-accident mobility.
