VICTORIO C. EDADES Victorio C. Edades (1895 -1985)
Recognized as the father of the Modern
Philippine Painting known for using dark somber colors in his Paintings. His works focused on factory workers, laborers, or other simple townspeople. He also introduced a degree program offering subjects in foreign languages and art history, which would later lead to a Bachelor’s degree in fine arts. Early styles after his stint on architecture already show his indication towards the impressionism technique. In the market and the picnic, his choice of subject matter do not take flight from pleasant daily scenery, his brush strokes and observance of non propertionality in the figures made his teachers consider him “very ambitious”. His earlier works already showed his affinity towards the style of Cezanne and other past impressionists. These are the four artworks of Victor Edades
1. The sketch (1928)
It gave Edades the artistic direction he was looking for. 2. The Builders Is one of Victorio Edades major works that he exhibited in 1928 during his one man show. 3. Poinsettia Girl (1976) Has become one of the most iconic works. It has been documented in multiple publications and was the star of the show ‘Edades in Retrospect’ at the Museum of Philippine art in 1980. 4. Mother and Daughter (1926) Is one of the pioneering figures of Filipino modern art on the U.S. Through his continuous propagation of modern art as shown in his works and teachings, Edades proved that modernists were not fooling people asserted.
Edades retired to Davao City with his family.
There he taught for a time at the Philippine women’s college and resumed his career as an artist. That’s all my presentation thank you.
