identify and solve special products.

These are called "special"

they do not to analyze the structure

need long of the factors to come
up with shortcuts or
solutions patterns in
multiplying them.

Method 1. Multiplying Two Binomials using
FOIL Method
The word FOIL helps us remember which
terms are to be multiplied.
The word FOIL stands for First, Outer, Inner
and Last terms.

Example. Multiply (x+1)(x+8)

Method 2. Multiplying Two Binomials
using Distributive Property
(x+1) (x+8) = x (x + 8) + 1( x +8)

Multiply x to (x+8) and 1 to (x+8).

Combine like terms.

PRODUCT OF
THE SUM AND
DIFFERENCE OF
TWO TERMS Note:
Each binomial factor is Product of the Sum
made up of two terms.
One factor is the sum of and Difference of Two
the terms and the other Terms Pattern
factor being their
difference. When you (x + y) (x - y) = x2 - y2
multiply these factors,
the product is the square
of the first term minus
the square of the second
term.
Example 1. Using the pattern, (3x + 4) (3x – 4) = (3x)2 – (4)2
multiply (3x + 4) (3x – 4). Square the first and
last term.
= 9x2 - 16

= 9x2 - 16
I The two middle terms are
opposites , so their sum is 0.

(2x +1 ) (2x – 1). the first

SQUARE The square of a
OF binomial is the square
of the first term plus
BINOMIAL (or minus) twice the
product of the two
terms plus the square
of the last term.

(x + y) 2 = x2 + 2xy + y2
(x - y) 2 = x2 - 2xy + y2
Square of Binomial Pattern
(x + y) 2 = x2 + 2xy + y2
(x - y) 2 = x2 - 2xy + y2

When you use these special products

patterns, remember that x and y can
be numbers, variables or even
algebraic expressions. Trinomials of
the form x2 + 2xy + y2 or x2 - 2xy + y2
are called perfect square trinomials
because each is the result after
squaring a binomial.
Example 1. Using the pattern, find the
product of (x + 9)2 .

(x +9)2 = (x)2 + 2(x)(9) + (9)2

= 16x2 - 40x + 25
CUBE OF A
BINOMIAL
The cube of a binomial (x + y) is
the sum of four terms where each
term can be outlined as follows:

First term – the cube of x

Second term – three times the product of x2 and y
Third term – three times the product of x and y2
Fourth term – the cube of y
Note:
Cube of Binomial Pattern
(x + y)3 = x3 + 3x2y +3xy2 + y3

(x - y)3 = x3 - 3x2y +3xy2 - y3

Example 1. Using the pattern, find the
product of (2x + 5)3 .

First term the cube of 2x or (2x)(2x)(2x) or

8x3
Second term three times the product
of (2x)2 and 5 or or
3(2x)2(5)
Third term
60x2
three times the product of
2x and (5)2 or 3(2x)(25) or
150x
Fourth term - or
the cube of 5 or 53
125
So, (2x + 5)3 = 8x3 + 60x2 + 150x + 125
Example 2. Using the pattern, find the
product of (4x - 2)3

First term the cube of 4x or (4x)(4x)(4x) or

64x3
Second term three times the product
of (4x)2 and -2 or 3(4x)2(- or
2)
Third term
-96x2
three times the product of
4x and (-2)2 or 3(4x)(4) or
48x
Fourth term - or
the cube of -2 or -23
-8
So, (4x -2)3 = 64x3 - 96x2 + 48x - 8
PRODUCT OF A BINOMIAL AND A
TRINOMIAL

In multiplying a binomial and a trinomial in the form

(x ± y)(x2 ± xy + y2), we first have to identify the
following characteristics of its factors before we use
the pattern:

1. The first term of the

trinomial is the square of 2. The second term of the
the first term of the trinomial is the additive
binomial. inverse of the product of
the first and second terms of
3. The third term of the
the binomial
trinomial is the square of
the second term of the
binomial.
