BIOGRAPHY
 Lyndall Fownes Urwick was a British management
consultant and business thinker. He was born in Briton on
March 3, 1891 and died on December 5, 1983. He was
educated at Oxford University and being recognized for
integrating the ideas of earlier theorists like Henry Fayol
into comprehensive theory of management administration.
He wrote an influential book called The Elements of
Business Administration, published in 1943. Other books he
published were The Elements of Administration,
Management of Tomorrow and more. Urwick worked in the
armed forces, industry and management consultancy and
it’s clear that his views on management were influenced by
his military service.

According to Urwick’s notes on the Theory of Organisation,1952,
organizations are built on ten principles as follows:
1. objective
2. correspondence
3. responsibility
4. authority
5. span of control
6. specialization
7. coordination
8. definition
9. balance
10. continuity
Principle of Objective

 For any organization to function there should be an objective


that needs to be fulfilled.
 Objectives are set for goal accomplishment.

 The organization should


have a clear goal
Principle of Correspondence
 The authority and responsibility should be
equal and should correspond with one
another.
 In every position, the responsibility and the authority
should correspond.

 Need proper communication between vario
department/manager.

Principles of Authority and Responsibility
 The principle of authority
- is the right way of commanding subordinates, issuing orders and
instructions, and exacting obedience from the team. It is also the right of the
manager to make decisions.

 The principle of responsibility


- the superior is absolutely responsible for the
work of subordinates.
The Principle of Span and Control
Number of subordinates or the units of work that an
administrator can personally direct.

subordinates working in an organization
The Principle of Specialization

 According to the principle, the whole work of a concern should be divided


amongst the subordinates on the basis of qualifications, abilities and skills.
It is through division of work specialization can be achieved which results
in effective organization.
 Means one group, one function
 limiting one’s work to a single function
The principle of coordination

- there is unity of action among the employees,


groups, and departments. It also brings harmony in
carrying out the different tasks and activities to
achieve the organization's objectives efficiently.
 the purpose is to facilitate coordination
or unity of effort.
The principle of definition

- there is a clear prescription of every duty.


- jobs, duties and relationships should be clearly
defined
The Principle of Balance

 Means that assignment of work should be such that


every person should be given only that much work
which he can perform well.

 Balance is an important principle to ensure equality in


the work processes
The Principle of Continuity

 Within the structure of organization, continuation of


activities is imperative condition/something that needs
to be done or given attention or action
 Organizational change requires a continuous process.
