AMERICAN CIVIL

WAR
MADE BY HOORAIN FATIMA
GRADE 8
WHAT IS THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR?

• The American Civil War took place between the United States of America and the
Confederate States of America, a group of eleven southern states that broke away from
the Union in 1860 and 1861. The war was sparked principally by a long-standing
disagreement about the slavery system.
MAIN IDEA FOR THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
• The war was fought over slavery (and mostly over its economic effects). The northern
class wanted economic progress in order to alter the southern (slavery-holding) way of
life. The southern states witnessed Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Establishment
make significant modifications to their way of life through the use of free slave labor.

DID THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR END SLAVERY?
• The countryside in the south was destroyed. The 13th Amendment, ratified in January
1865, opened a brand-new chapter in American history. It ended slavery in the United
States, and with the war's end, four million African Americans were free.
WHO WON THE CIVIL WAR?
• The Union succeeded in the American Civil War. When Confederate General Robert E.
Lee surrendered his soldiers to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court
House in Virginia in April 1865, the war was practically over.
