A WIND FARM AND

WILDLIFE IN
MOROCCO
MADE BY HOORAIN FATIMA
Thousand of birds fly over Morocco each year when they migrate. They fly north to Europe in
summer and south to west Africa in winter.
Before the decision was taken to build the wind farm, there was research into the possible
effects of the turbines on:
1. The landscape,
2. The local population and their activities,
3. The migratory birds.
Wind Farm in Morocco
The 84 turbines are in 3 groups in order to provide 3 ‘corridors’ through which the migratory
birds could fly.
Those who study birds in Morocco and who belong to the Morocco Ornithology Group have now
observed 9000 birds since the wind farm was built in 2000.
They reported that the birds are flying through these ‘ corridors’ and that only 2 birds, so far,
have been killed by flying into the blades of a wind turbine.
