WHAT IS A MAGNETIC
STIRRER

■ A magnetic stirrer or magnetic stir plate is commonly used in

laboratories to ensure liquid samples are homogenous in
consistency and temperature . mainly used for stirring low
viscosity liquid or solid-liquid mixture.

A magnetic stirrer is a laboratory device consisting of

either a rotating magnet or stationary electromagnets
creating a rotating magnetic field.

HISTORY
■ The first magnetic stirrer was patented by Richard Stringham of Utah in 1917.Mr.
Stringham's mixer used stationary electromagnets in the base, rather than a rotating
permanent magnet, to rotate the stirrer.
■ The inventor nicknamed the stir bar a “Flea” because of the way it jumped and spun in
the flask.

1939: Heating is added to the stirrer.
■ 1944: Coatings of glass, porcelain and plastic are added to prevent the stirrer from
compromising solutions.
■ Arthur Rosinger of Newark,1944 New Jersey, U.S.
■ He filed a  patent Mr. Rosinger's patent includes a description of a coated bar magnet
placed in a vessel, which is driven by a rotating magnet in a base below the vessel.
■ Mr. Rosinger also explains in his patent that coating the magnet in plastic or covering it
with glass or porcelain makes it chemically inert.
Principal

■ A Magnetic Stirrer is a device widely used in laboratories and

consists of a rotating magnet or a stationary electromagnet that
creates a magnetic field.
■ This device is used to make a stir bar immerse in a liquid , quickly
spin or stirring or mixing a solution.

WORKING
Micro motor drives a magnet to generate a rotating magnetic
field to stir the stirring bar in the vessel, making the
solution conduct a completely mixed reaction, stirring
speed is adjustable, widely applied to solvent stirring in
different viscosity.

It equips with a temperature control system, which can

heat and control the temperature of the sample according
to experiment requirement, maintaining the needed
temperature condition and guaranteeing the mixed liquid
meets the experiment need.
PROCEDURE

■ 1. Put the bottle(or other containers) on the working table.

■ 2. Switch on the power switch, indicator will light.
■ 3. Turn on the heating power switch, the heating indicator will
light, this means the heater is working now. Insert the sensor into
solution ,adjust the thermostat knob to the desired temperature
scale.
■ 4. Adjust the speed control knob to the required speed.
■ 5. After work, set the speed control knob at the lowest speed
position, the heating switch is in a non-working state, turn off the
power switch, cut off the power supply.
■ 6. Clean the working surface and sensor, make sure no water and
dirt on it.
