DBAR DISASTER: Report for Assessment

Amod Mani DIXIT, Nepal

September 9, 2022, Beijing, China

Description on the Progress
Summary
• Collaborative research with national and
Evolution of Landslide
international research centers in hazard mapping
Hazard
and risk assessment using satellite technologies
and development of open data management
system and policies for open data
• Risk Scenario development using census and
remote sensing data and use of the outputs for
capacity development, strategic planning, policy
draft formulation
• Continued assisting local government and
institution in understanding risk, risk reduction,
capacity building and emergency response
capacity enhancement
Description on the Progress:
Main Activity Highlights
 METEOR Project on Innovative
Highlights & Research Innovation application of Earth Observation (EO)
technologies to improve
Dynamics of Earthquake understanding of exposure.
Induced Landslides https://meteor-project.org/data/;

project.org
 Landslide monitoring and observation
from satellite data interpretation to
study the landslide dynamics
undertaken in collaboration with
IHRR/ Durham University. And
implementation of project Sajag
Nepal (www.sajag-nepal.org)
 Earthquake Risk Scenarios
development using Census-based
Exposure Data and Satellite-based
hazard data.
Description on the Progress
Data Produced:
• 14 multi-temporal landslide inventories through manual mapping on medium-
resolution (10-30 m) satellite imagery (Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2). Bi-annual
inventory mapping allowing the impact of the earthquake and six post-
earthquake monsoon seasons to be assessed.
• Application of Earth Observation (EO) technologies to improve understanding
of exposure with a specific focus on the countries of Nepal and Tanzania.
• Population and building
exposure in Nepal recorded
by construction type within
each VDC in Nepal ~ Census
(2011).

b. National Symposium on Disaster Risk Management
and Resilience Building on Earthquake Safety Day
2022
c. Collaborative efforts with Nepal Geological
Society, Universal Engineering and Science
College, and others in organizing several national
conferences on aspects of earth sciences and
disaster risk management

Response Network (ADRRN) is
envisioning replication of Sajag
achievements.
Capacity building:
• By virtue of professional
involvement and implementational
responsibilities, Young and Early- /

on-the-job training in NSET, other
institutions and also in the Institute
of Hazard Risk and Resilience
(IHRR) of Durham University.
• All data generated and
achievements made reported to
and archived in the national DRR
portal of NDRRMA
