Multi-tester
Sometimes called VOM (Voltmeter,
Ohmmeter, milliammeter)
It is the best instrument that can
measure voltage, resistance and current
It is generally made of two types:
Analog and Digital
Analog multi-tester

is based on micro
ammeter, electrical test
instruments which are
used to measure voltage,
current, resistance,
amperage, frequency,
and signal power.
have a numeric display, and
Digital multi-tester
may also show a graphical
(DMM, DVOM) bar representing the
measured value. It can
measures the amperage,
voltage, ohms, temperature,
frequency, capacitance,
continuity, and resistance.
Parts of a

ports
a. mAVΩ- port which
allows the measurement
current up to 200 mA,
voltage, and resistance.
b. 10A- is use to measures
large current in the circuit.
c. COM-or common port
that is connected to –ev of
a circuit and the black
probe is plugged into it.
4. Probes
it consists of
positive probes
which is black in
colored and red for
negative probes.

Procedures in measuring
using the Digital
Multimeter:
voltage
1. Set the multimeter in voltage.
2. Insert the red and black probes of
the multimeter to the sockets
marked as ‘V’ and ‘COM’.
3. Select the expected range in the
voltage.
4. The AC or DC should be selected in
the voltmeter section of Figure 1.
5. The meter reads the value of the
voltage, provided one connects the
leads across the component or at the
point which the voltage needs to be
measured.
resistance
1. Configure the multimeter to
ohmmeter. The red and the black
probes are inserted to the sockets
marked as ‘V’ and ‘COM’, so the
selection switch is set to an expected
range in ohmmeter region (Figure 1).
2. The leads needs to connect across the
component that will measure the
resistance.
3. Read in the screen display that
contains the value of the resistance.
1. Insert the probes into the sockets
and set the selection switch to point
in diodes check position as shown in
Figure 1.
Diode Check 2. When the red lead of the multimeter
is connected to positive terminal of
the diode then its negative lead is
connected to the negative terminal
of the diode, it will have a low
reading on the multimeter.
3. Connecting the red lead to the
negative terminal of the diode and
the black to the positive terminal, it
will get a high value.
4. If the readings obtained than the
expected result, the diode is working
properly.
Current
1. Insert the red probe of the multimeter to the current measuring
sockets: mA, measures the lower level or 20 A that measures larger
current.
2. Connect the meter to the line through the current is to be measured.
3. Set the approximate range around which we expect the current to be
in the ammeter section of Figure 1.
4. If we switch on the power supply, the meter will read the current
flowing through the circuit.
Continuity Check
1. The probes are inserted into the sockets as that in the case
of voltage measurement and selector switch is made to
point towards continuity check position (Figure 1).
2. The points to be tested are touched with the leads of the
probes.
3. If the multimeter beeps out, it means that the points are
shorted or else the resistance between them can be read out
from the display.
Steps in
Using Analog
Multi-tester
1. Attach the test
probe to its
appropriate jack.
The black test
probe to the
common jack that
is negative, while
the red test probe
is to the positive
jack.
2. Look at the
pointer if it
rests exactly
at the zero
position in
ohmmeter
range.
3. Check the probes, be
sure that it is in good
condition. Calibrate
the ohmmeter.
a. Set the range based
on the resistance of
the multi-tester
according to its
corresponding
selector
b. Short the two test
probes lead together.
4. If the
pointer cannot
rest at exactly
“O” ohm
reading,
Note: The pointer adjust the ohm
should point towards
zero ohm reading.
adjustment.
5. Let the
indicated pointer
rests to the range
of ohmmeter scale,
by adjusting the
ohm adjustment
counterclockwise
until the pointer
rests “O” ohm
reading.
Resistance
Measurements
1. Attach the test probe to its appropriate jack. The
black test probe to the common jack that is
negative, while, the red test probe is to the
positive jack.
2. Avoid holding the black and red test probes lead,
because our body has resistance that may affect
the reading value of the electronic components
we are testing. Specifically, in testing the resistor,
capacitors, diodes and others.
3. If you do not know the value of the
resistor to be measured, take a look for
the Ohmmeter selector setting, to have
a clear reading in the ohmmeter scale.
4. With the
help of the
selector
switch, select
the desired
resistance
range scale.
Properly Care and Maintenance of a
Multi-tester
1. Always read the manual of a multi-tester before using it.
2. In reading the amount of voltage always start to the highest range to
set the tester setting.
3. Be sure that the multi-tester is configured based on its range setting.
4. Check the battery before using.
5. If the multi-tester is not in use or it will be stored set the selector
switch to 1000V or off position.
6. Avoid dropping the tester.
As a student, what are the
benefits that you may get
from the multi-tester?
