 DEFINITION
The word drama is taken from the word “dran”
which means to move or to act. It is a kind of a
story composed in dialogue not be read but to be
watched because it is acted on stage.
 CHARACTERISTICS OF DRAMA
Characters
Characters play an important role in the
drams whether it is a major or minor one.
A brief description of each character
should be included in the drama.
Dramatic Conventions
The specific actions or techniques
the actor, writer or director has
employed to create a desired
dramatic effect / style.
Symbol
The use of gestures, objects or persons is
needed to showcase the inner meaning
that is beyond the literal.
Drama Script
A play or drama script is story that has been
written for actors to perform, with the term
“play” relating to a theatrical performance.
 CHARACTERISTICS OF DRAMA
Monologue
When a character gives a long speech
to a silent listener on the stage.
Aside
When a character secretly makes a
remark to the audience and the other
characters cannot listen.

Soliloquy
When an alone character reveals
the personal thoughts to the
audience.

 TYPES OF DRAMA
Melodrama
01
The movie It’s a Wonderful Life is an example of a melodrama. In this movie we see the
dramatic story of George Bailey who feels as though his loved ones would be better off
without him. George Bailey is about to take his own life. An angel stops him, and takes him
on a journey into the future to see what life would be like without him. He soon sees that he
matters, even with the challenges of life, and goes back to his family to embrace his role as
husband and father.

Tragedy

William Shakespeare’s famous play Romeo and Juliet is an example of a tragedy. In this play, two
young children fall in love and feel the need to hide this from their parents due to their feuding
families. However, their rash thinking leads them to their ultimate deaths.
 Comedy

The television show Seinfeld is considered a comedy. This sitcom follow the lives of four
friends and the humorous situations they encounter together.

Tragicomedy

The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare is considered one of the most popular traditional
tragicomedy examples. Though it has a comedic structure, there are tragic characters and tragic
events.
 THE FUNCTION OF DRAMA
Educative : it educates people to be conscious of activities around them.

Informative : it serves as a means of communication which creates awareness and

sensitizes people to understand themselves in the society.

Entertainment : it is an avenue to satisfy the yearning of the people when it comes

to pleasure seeking.
Tolerance : it helps people in the tolerating themselves.
Therapeutic : it helps or enable patients to release tensions and also provides
therapist with valuable information on and insight into the patient’s state of mind.

Cooperation : working together as a team can be easily achieved by watching or

acting drama.
