White Fang

(1906)

By Rudakova Ekaterina 11 ‘A’

Adventure story by Jack London, the main character of which is a hybrid of a dog and a wolf named White Fang.

White Fang’s father was a wolf, and his mother, Keechie, was half wolf and half
dog. He was born in Northern Glusa and was the only survivor of his brood. In the
North they often had to starve, and that is what killed his siblings. His father, a one-
eyed wolf, soon dies in an unequal fight with a lynx. The wolf cub and his mother
are left alone. The world is full of surprises, and one day on his way to a creek, the
wolf cub stumbles upon strange human creatures. It turns out that his mother had a
master, the brother of the Grey Beaver Indian. He again becomes Kichi’s master. He
now also owns the wolf cub, to which he gives the name – White Fang.
• Soon the brother leaves, giving the dogs to Grey Beaver as a debt. It is difficult
for White Fang to get used to the new life at the Indian settlement: he constantly
has to repel attacks from the dogs, and he has to abide by the strict laws of the
people, whom he believes to be gods, often cruel, sometimes just. With only one
hatred among his fellows and humans, and a perpetual feud with all, White Fang
develops quickly but one-sidedly.
