FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL

 FTP is the simplest and most secure way to exchange files


over the internet.

 FTP does not really move , it copies files from one computer
to another.

 FTP is internets TCP /IP protocol suit application layer.

 It need to be installed on your computer and can only be used


with a live connection to the internet.

Some commonly used FTP client include the following

 Filezilla

 Fire FTP

 Dreamweaver

 Command FTP

 CuteFTP
HISTORY

 The completion of FTP dates from 1971 when a fil etransfer


system between MIT mchine was developed.

 Many RFC have since made improvement to the basic


protocol but the greatest innovation dates from July 1973.

 The FTP protocol is currently defined by RFC 959.


FEATURES

 FTP operates in a client environment meaning that the remote


machine is configured as a server and consequently waits for the
other machine to request a service for it.

 In UNIX the service is provided by what is called a daemon, a


small task that runs the bacckground. The FTP daemons is
called ftpd.

 FTP allows the files to have ownership and access restriction.

 FTP hides the details of individual computer system.


EXAMPLES

 Downloading MP3.

 Online games and relay heavily on FTP.

 Other events like auction and online trading use FTP to


transact business.

 FTP is commonly is used to transfer webpage files from there


creator to the computer that acts as their server for everyone
on the internet.
